Low Carbing in the Long Term?

With all this discussion of low carb diets, I am really interested to find out if anyone here had been low carb eating for many years. By low carb I mean <50g carbs/day.

The reason I ask is that I ate this way for more than 2 years but found that I was effectively undereating and could not maintain muscle mass or energy levels.

I'm more comfortable and healthy with fairly stable BG levels at around 100g/carbs/day.

I'm looking forward to hearing what long term low carbers mights have to say

I've been eating around 50 or 60 carbs a day since 2006 and have had no problem with either muscle mass or energy. Having dropped those 46 pounds of extra baggage actually has increased my energy level.

I've only been doing this for about a year and a half, but my weight stabilized last November, and I've had no problem with lack of energy.

Thanks so far for the info. I must have been doing something wrong and simply not eating enough of something else. Possibly fat, I was pretty anal about cutting down on fat and I'm not sure that was necessary given that my cholesterol is fine.

Joel what are colorado trousers when they are at home??

That would have been your problem cluck...I have to admit when I first started LC at <30g per day, I had a big fear of fat. 2 yrs in I moved up to 60g per day and now do between 30- 100g per day, usually in the 60 area...
I am fascinated to note that everyone dropped weight on LC except me.. though to be fair I had no trouble with weight gain for the first time in years.
When I got over that fear I ate plenty of fat and nothing bad has happened to me..5 yrs in

hi hi! my cholesterol was always fine. but my triglycerides sucked. i seem to have fixed that by eating less carbs and more fat and more protein. go figger......

Colorado is a australian clothes store that sells what i think of as "semi-peri-preppy" goods. in the same style as "LL Bean". i like their stuff...
