Lightbulb Diet drinks won't provide shield from extra pounds

I guess that this is not surprising that Diet Sodas are not what it's meant to be. I.E. the diet you have without the diet??

Have a read of this as this will have some idea to keep the bottles on the store shelf.
A study shows sodas in general increase the odds of gaining weight in middle age.

No diet soda touches our lips

When my husband was 1st dx'ed last Nov., we found that most diet soda and diet yogurt contained Aspertame. A neighbor told us that around here, pig farmers feed that stuff to their pigs to fatten them for market.

I was feeding my husband diet yogurt in the hopes of lowering his BG. Not 5 min. after having one he would be starving! At first I thought it was a lack of will power (sorry about that Honey) but after researching the ingredients we learned it was a direct result of ingesting Aspertame.

We believe it is all part of a evil plan. . . . We still have 2 liters of diet A & W Root Beer in the closet. They may be there for years. I returned about 8 liters but left those 2 as a reminder.

    Aw, that's an OLD story.

And ... do you maybe suspect that weight gain might already have been problematic, for the people who drank diet soft drinks? Eh?

I am drinking my diet sodas. I have had too much else stripped from my repertoire!

I've been guzzling diet soft drinks with aspartame ever since diagnosis, almost 23 years now.

A number of years ago my brother-in-law (not diabetic) switched from drinking regular soda to diet. He drank a lot of soda, my sister said he could easily go through more than 2 2-liter bottles a day. By switching to diet soda and not changing anything else he lost 15 pounds.

If you get a double whopper with cheese and a jumbo fries with your diet soda or you wash down a giant bag of chips with Diet Coke you probably aren't going to lose any weight.

No Linda, As I think is to make an effort to quit is a problem. The amount that we drink is quite a concern. I drink of an average of 2 Liters a day!! And yes it's quite a lot No wonder that I am heavy.

Aww Linda, Everything in moderation as we just have to have less of it. In our summer I keep some bottles and refill it with water and freeze it. When we get humid again I take out a 2 Liter bottle out and as it melts I have a drink. So my repertoire need's to be broadened. Oh there's beer too.

I drink 2 Liters a day!!, Little own a week. So there's your difference. So shall we say that Coke is Carbonated Coffee that's cold. What makes me worse is that I also like a Latte too.

Aww Blue Eyes, I didn't mean to shock you. I am hooked on this drink and I am about to find ways to kick it. Heh I would even buy a coffee machine in place of the coke that I drink. it will be paid off in two years with the coffee!!! LOL

I don't see anything persuasive in the article that suggests diet soft drink actually directly causes obesity... which seems to be what you've gotten out of it Peter. Fair enough, your opinion is your own and it is important. But even the article and sources in the article are at pains to say that is NOT a conclusion, even though it is rather sensationalist in tone.

I think drinking 2 litres a day sounds excessive too, like drinking 2 litres of milk, or 2 litres of alcohol, all sound a bit excessive. And artificial sweeteners are rather sus and chemically in nature. But, I would be wary of putting weight problems onto them, simply because a study has found a possibly indirect or even, barely related, link in population studies (we just don't know what the study finding shows). Unless, you are eating more and more of other hi carb/calorie things because you think the diet drink gives you a "free pass", which seems a valid psychological reason why some people may find themselves gaining weight while simultaneously drinking diet drink (getting fooled by advertising that it's going to make them slim and light all by itself). I really am not sure if that is underrating people's intelligence, though, not sure. You don't strike me as working that way, Peter!

OK So I would think that it's a manufactured buy a man as it's not at all natural Subby. Unlike water is natural as it's better for you. If you go that belief then Voila you would have some followers. Subby, I like what you say as this is just the tip of an iceberg. Also the term Diet has been banded around to the general public like a sack of potatos

    Zevia

i just tried cola flavored zevia today - it is a soda made with stevia. i ended up adding a big drop of liquid stevia to it and then got the perfect taste for me.

the even better news to me is that it only has 5mg of sodium per can ! if i have a regular diet soda, i blow up like a balloon.

    it also has no aspartame.
    Current meds:
    2 mg Amaryl
    6 mg Victoza
    Current supplements:
    Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc Combo x2
    Potassium 3 mg x2

    HbA1c
    4/5/10 - 6.7
    12/18/09 - 7.9
    6/22/09 - 7.2
    3/19/09 - 11.8
    2/5/09 - 10.4 (just starting meds)

    I've lost 26 lbs !!

I dunno. To say diet drinks are just as much to blame as regular is...naive at best. The number of calories and carbs in regular soda is , and extra carbs = weight gain.

And dont feel bad about the soda you drink...I mentioned it in another thread, but Im a caffeine addict, and I have no intention or desire to curb my intake anytime soon. Told my doc as much lol On an average day I'll drink a pot of coffee, and either 1 or 1 1/2 2 liters or 6-8 cans of pepsi max (double caffeine) per day. Sometimes more. I also use Penguin brand caffeinated mints :p

    No Diet Drinks Allowed

I have tried different diet colas and hate them all.I made an agreement with my doctor.I keep my regular Dr Pepper and cut out something else.He said okay and put it in my chart that at any time if I am admitted into hospital,I still get my regular Dr Pepper.I also have to have my 2 cups of coffee every morning with sugar, don't do splenda or any of the other stuff.

Just cut something that you know you can do without and keep that thing you really want.

You want to watch those cola drinks whether they are sugar free or not. 3 weekends ago I went to a club outing and it was a hot day and the only sugar free drink they had there was pepsi-max. I drank 4 cans of it during the day. The next morning I had to have routine blood tests for dialysis and they put me straight into hospital on a drip to clear the potassium and other stuff out of my system from the cola.

I have should of listened to my ballet teacher more as she has always promoted unnamed or food that don't come in a box. So we have Coke as it's in a bottle and so it's manufactured, I.E. Made buy man.

Raw food is the main thing that she promoted!! So sandwiches was our lunch with fruit and plenty of water!!! No soft drink. However we learn later in life.
