How do you take your oatmeal?

Oatmeal is far from appealing for me .. I like the instant maple and brown sugar... with extra sugar ....I know I know. So my doc prescribed me to eat oatmeal/ oatbran 1 cup everyday. I can't do that plain (blah) how do I make it an I can eat this everyday edible? Any suggestions?

I can't tolerate ANY oatmeal...all of it tends to raise my blood sugar higher than I like.

To answer your question, Splenda would be a good alternative to sugar, as would cinnamon and pecans. Some folks here have decent results using the steel-cut oats, as opposed to the instant oatmeal.

Make sure you check your blood sugar 2 hrs after the first bite to see how it affects you.

Not only is splenda good but there are now flavored splendas. I have found three different flavors and use them to alter the daily oatmeal experience!

Also, a tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa and a splenda makes chocolate oatmeal for those chocoholics among us.

Works with steel cut oats too and grits.

I take the instant myself, usually straight up.
But when I want to add a lil kick, I would put in some fruit.
Banana or some frozzen berries. The good thing about the frozzen barries is if its hot enough they melt and are really good.

Instant is expensive and sugary, yuk! Get the real oats in the huge container -- Quaker has bigger flakes -- I bought the "store" brand last time & the oats were tiny and taste mushy.

1/2 cup oats & 1 cup water -- microwave one minute (or 1 1/2 or 2, depending on your power), then add one or two spendas, cinnamon to taste, and a bit of butter. Perfect and healthy and cheap.

That's pathetic for a doctor; he/she has watched far too many commercials.

I made some homemade muesli without raisins and other dried fruit. That seems to work quite well although I did add a few nuts. Too much bran is bad for you, although oats are supposed to be good for maintaining constant sugar levels. Its not all that cheap but it does last you a very long time

Ingredients:
Oats
Toasted wheat flakes
Wheat germ
Bran
Sunflower seeds
Pumpkin seeds
Linseed
Brazil nuts
Cashew nuts
Almonds
Desiccated coconut
Hazelnuts
Optional: raisins/sultanas/currents/chopped dates

Splenda and promise margarine, to slow it down a bit.....works well good postmeal numbers when I add the fat, and add in some turkey bacon, or some walnuts...slow slow, and it works like a dream...
