For those who have had "drastic" weight loss in a short period of time ...

There are many on here that say that they have lost 30 or more pounds in just a few weeks or so since changing their diets / lifestyles. That seems like an awful lot / quick loss. I don't expect you to post your weights but can you figure what the percentage of loss was for you during what time frame? I know that say 10% of a smaller person would be less than 10% of a much larger person. I'd just like to be able to figure what is a reasonable expectation percentage-wise for me!

At the beginning, I was losing about 10 pounds (4-5% of my weight) per month. As I got lighter, this percentage dropped to more like 5 pounds (1-2% of my weight), until it eventually stopped (with about 20 pounds to go. Argh!).

since i was diagnosed in june of 07.i have lost 25% of my weight.the first 50 came off easy,the last 10 took a month or so.

Thank you. I am just trying to figure what a reasonable expectation should be so I don't set myself up for disappointment! It's been 4 weeks since my last DE appointment and weigh-in. I have 4 more weeks to go. I do not plan on weighing myself before then. I have no idea how much I have lost so far .... I do know I can see it in the mirror ... undressed ... and my pants are fitting better. Of course the gut is the last to go and the main part that NEEDS to go!

I've heard that 1.5-2 lbs/week is a very healthy weight loss goal. Of course larger people lose more weight faster at first. Generally, the slower and more consistently you take off weight, the better it tends to stay off.

Byetta 5 mcg
HCTZ 12.5 mg every other day for BP
Enalapril 20 mg 1 daily (ace-inhibitor)
Lower carb dieter (approx. 75 total carbs/day, more on weekends), taking chromium, multivitamin and fish oil tablets


Initial A1C 8/06: 9.6
11/06: 6.2.
03/07: 5.3
06/07: 5.4
10/07: 5.3
05/08: 6.2 (right after dealing with shingles and bronchitis)

Yea, I've heard that too. I was just hoping to hear that there was a percentage to go by. I am dying to find out how I am doing ... in case you couldn't tell! I will definitely be posting an update when I find out ... that is if I'm not wallowing in self-pity somewhere!

I know it's not the answer you're looking for but I'd honestly tell you not to worry about it. Everyone is different and putting yourself up against someone else's # or an "expert's" guidelines is just setting yourself up for disappointment (if you lose slower) or concern (if you lose faster). You'll lose weight quicker at first and the loss will get slower and slower as you continue to lose; those big bodies can sure burn a lot of calories.

I'd say that if your clothes are getting smaller and you're feeling better then you're on the right track. It can certainly be helpful (and also motivating) to see that number on the scale going down but I wouldn't compare yours against anyone else's, at least not at first. Losing weight is hard and in most cases requires some fairly significant lifestyle changes. Hopefully you're losing the weight because you want to. Don't compare yourself to someone else. You're doing it for you, so just worry about you.

I had a really hard time with my weight for a long time, I never could seem to get it down at all. I finally decided that it was time to get healthy and lose the weight. I didn't worry about the scale or how fast it came off; I just worried about following my plan, doing the best I could, and making sure I still enjoyed living my life while I was doing it. The weight came off, some of it very quickly, some not so quickly. I still have some to go but I'll get there. I can tell you this, it's a pretty cool feeling when you can start talking to an old friend and they don't even recognize you.

I think Linda is fairly accurate, I have worked with the IT side of a major weight loss organisation and they do say that a steady weight loss of 1.5-2lbs per week is good. Often in your first week you can lose much more than that but it will generally settle down to a steady loss from week 2/3 onwards.

Since my DX 13 weeks ago I have lost 36lbs. What we often forget is that it took time to put weight on, but for some reason we expect to lose it overnight.

I know what you say is true ... and the other comments as well. I just feel like I have already come to a standstill and it is waaaaaaaay too soon!!! I'm just wanting desperately for my husband or one of my girls to say, "hey, you look like you've lost some weight!" I find myself subtly pulling up my pants to "clue" that they are getting baggy!
