Cole Slaw?

Does anyone know what the carb / sugar content is for cole slaw? I absolutely love it and often get it now as a side substitute. What is cole slaw anyway ... is it cabbage?

Anyway, I figured it was considered a veggie and it tastes like it is vinegar based but I didn't know if there was some sugar added or not? It doesn't seem to affect my pp BG readings, but I just was wondering!

Thanks!

No idea. Think it would depend on where it is from and all that. I have a friend who makes it whenever we go over, found out later she adds lots of sugar (but does to everything). Think lots of restaurants do too. The cabbage and vinegar (and vegs. if they chop them in) wouldn't be much, but if they add sugar it could be trouble. Also Mayo.

If you buy it premade you will find that the second ingredient is usually sugar and is very high in carbs. If you make it yourself you can keep the carb content to next to nothing.

It all depends if you want an oil and vinegar or a creamy coleslaw as to how careful you have to be with carbs.

Coleslaw is cabbage.

Hey, I was right ... it's cabbage! LOL! I really like the slaw at Cracker Barrel. It doesn't seem to have anything thick like Mayo in it. It is more "watery" like probably vinegar. I'm guessing it may have some sugar in it but at least it doesn't seem to raise my pp BG. I'll just try not to over-do it! THANKS!

Low Carb Cole Slaw

1 bag ready cut cole slaw
3/4 cup sour cream
3/4 cup mayo
2-2 1/2 TBS vineger
1 tsp celery seed
1 TBS minced onion
2-3 paks splenda

Mix together. It's best made in advance. It's wonderful.

Thank you, that sounds yummy. I suppose you could make it healthier by using light sour cream and light mayo.

Light sour cream and light mayo are higher in carbs.

Oh, really??? Well good then, I'll take the real deal!

Oh and I just got back from eating at Cracker Barrel. I asked the waitress to check and see if they put sugar in it. She said "yes" so I just ate half of it. I think that's a decent compromise!

I have never been a big slaw eater...but I tasted a little last month in a local restaurant. I couldn't stop eating it! They had mixed small chunks of blue cheese into the slaw...yikes, it was good. It was heavy on the fat content with lots of mayo...almost totally white in color.

Other slaws are still "green" and more of a vinegar dressing, so less sugar. It just depends on the recipe, I'm sure.

Do a search for cole slaw, there was a discussion and recipes not long ago. I can't figure out how to put the link in here or I would. I think the venegar kind of counteracts the small amount of sugar added to most slaws. I never seem to have any problems with BS from slaw, and I have it often. Just made cat fish with white beans and cole slaw for supper....3 hours later I am at 121.....not bad considering I fried the fish.

Should have known if it tastes really good, it can't be healthy! Oh well, right now it doesn't seem to have an impact on my pp readings so I will just eat it in moderation!

I don't care for any of the "fried" stuff at KFC, but I do like their cole slaw. It's actually cold, for starters. I hate slaw that has been sitting out...yuck.

But the KFC tastes fresh and green...not too much mayo, if any.

YES! KFC is where I first learned to love cole slaw!

1 1/2 cups of the already mixed slaw I get has 5 carbs (very few carrot pieces, mostly red and green cabbage). Today, at Sprouts (health grocery store) I found this calorie-free slaw dressing. No fat, no carbs, no gluten or cholesterol (200 mg sodium per serving). They have several other "calorie-free" dressings: made by Walden Farms. Now that makes some low-cal and carb slaw! I just had 3 cups of it & I'm full (10 carbs total).

Before that, to make slaw, I was using no-fat, 4 carb per serving mayo, a little lemon juice and splenda, which wasn't fancy but I liked it.
