Started diet this week

I started a diet this week after my Dr. said he would like to see me about 15 lbs. lighter. I have cut my lunches in half. Example: I used to get a footlong sub for lunch, now I only get a half. My goal is to keep my carbs below 50 for lunch. I have also started taking 2 15 minute walk breaks (1 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon) and a 10-15 minute workout on the elliptical trainer every other day at home. I have not set a carb limit for my dinner yet, doing this 1 step at a time. I try to eat a smarter dinner. I figure if I cut my lunches in half, start more consistent exercise, I should be able to lose the weight in about 3 months. I do not want to do a hard specific diet, just trying to alter my lifestyle and eating habits.
No real reason to posting this, just wanted to tell someone.
Thanks for reading.

Well done Glucoweb, I think you are taking a very sensible approach of altering your lifestyle and habits.

I'm sure that you can reach your goal within 3 months. Do keep us informed of your progress.

Good Luck, The bread on the Subs would kill me! SubWay has a Low Carb Wrap the serve that is really good. I don't really do any kind of Diet either, just watch out for most carbs and always have a weekend or two a month that I treat myself and it keeps me on track for the rest of the month... GOOD LUCK!

I have to get back on track in losing weight. When I was first diagnosed, I went to see a nutritionist and she put me on 1200calories a day ( 30 carbs breakfast, 30 carbs lunch, 30 carbs dinner and 3 - 15 carb snacks). I was writing everything down that I ate so I can keep track of my carbs. It worked because I lost roughly 20 pounds. I also increased the # of days at the gym from 3 to 5 days a week. Lately though I have been finding myself slowly gaining some of the weight back. I have to confess as well that my gym time has dwindled down to 2 days a week. I need to get myself motivated again but I am having trouble with this. I don't know why.
I need some motivational help!!!

Good job, Glucoweb! I think Dave is right: you can certainly lose 15 pounds in 3 months. And as noted in another thread, sometimes, you just have to take baby steps to do it.

Even though my diet allows 1400-1600 calories and 150 carbs per day, I try to shoot for more like 1000-1100 calories and 100 carbs. Believe me: I can afford a lower calorie diet. I'm not in danger of wasting away ANY time soon. LOL.

Good work in taking control and let us know how you get along!

OK, I have been on the diet for exactly 1 week. All lunches, except for Sunday's, has been under 50 carbs. On Sunday I had a big lunch, but only a can of soup for dinner. My supper meals I have been fairly liberal about, but not as bad as before the diet. I have maintained my exercise schedule. I did contract a sinus infection in the past couple of days and it has me worn slap out it feels. According to my scale at home I am 2 lbs lighter than I weighed at the doctor's office last Monday afternoon. Not sure if the 2 lbs. are because I am not feeling well, and have been flushing fluids (water) through me like crazy.

Hang in there Glucoweb. Try not to think of your new way of eating as a diet, but a new lease on life. Diets rarely work, changes in lifestyle are for good.

I am getting out on my walks again. The weather has been beautiful and I have no excuse except I am being lazy. There.....I said it.

Good job in starting with "baby steps" ... that is what I call it for me! I know that if I set too many goals at once that I will get overwhelmed and just give up! We can't afford to do that! So keep up the gradual changes and soon you will forget that you have even given up anything at all!

So far it has been going good, exceot for the forgetting what I have given up LOL but I am sure that will happen. When I weighed at the Dr.'s I was 215.5, got on my scale at home this morning and it said 209.2, so at the end of the second week, I fell real good about how things are going.

Be sure to keep up your good work too. I tell you, it might be a mental thing, but I also just feel better all the way around, my T-Shirts don't feel as tight already. Overall, I just feel better about myself.

I think the "cutting food in 1/2" is a great visual to losing weight. I think most people lose touch with how much is served to us...and how much we serve ourselves! good luck!

Thanks. The original plan was to cut the food half and you are right it started as a visual, because I used to always get footlong subs when I had them for lunch and so just started getting 6 inch subs. Since I do not want to eat Subs everyday for lunch my plan is to keep my lunch carbs under 50. It is still s struggle somedays, but I just keep ignoring the urge to snack on something else. Other than Zaxby's Chicken, I have also avoided the fast food hamburger places and plan to eliminate French Fries completely. What is going to be interesting is to see how I do in about week when I take my family on vacation to DisneyWorld. Thanks again for all the encouragement!

Remember that all foods add up calorie-wise...not just carb foods. I really like the website called "MyFoodDiary.com" (not a plug...just good feedback...it does cost each month, but only minimally)

What I like about MFD is that you can plug all your foods into a daily diary and get very detailed/specific nutritional advice. Sometimes I'll eat a meal, go to the computer and log the meal...then get the total carbs and quickly go bolus...it has surprised me at how much my guestimating is off sometimes...

I can also see when I'm trending too many carbs or fat. See when I'm not eating enough protein, etc.

It will let you see carbs/fat/proteins in a pie chart of bar graph which is interesting.

You can plug recipes into the program and get carb info back...helpful with some "family" recipes.

You can also enter your insulin into the meal plan...I just put "0's" into the nutritional boxes.
