Question Type 2 and Caffeine

Someone just told me over the weekend that i should really stop drinking coffee and diet coke becasue it slows the production of Insulin.

Is that true?

he told me that if i stop drinking caffeine my Pancreas will heal itself and start producing more insulin.

True, false, little bit true, mostly true???

False. Caffeine does not affect the pancreas or insulin production at all. Stopping drinking coffee won't make your diabetes go away. But, having said that, caffeine does affect blood sugar. It stimulates the production of stress hormones, which increase glucose production by the liver.

Caffiene DOES make my glucose numbers higher and specifically my first thing in the morning, before I've had my coffee for the day, numbers. It really surprised me to find this out. When I got off the caffiene, my morning fasting numbers improved by about 20% which is substantial. For me, caffiene on Monday morning effects my waking glucose numbers on Tuesday morning. And, there's no one who loves caffiene more than me. I wish it didn't hurt me like it does... Now I do let myself have it, but only one weekend day per week, and just one cup (but it's a BIG cup).

I have never seen any adverse affects so far from drinking coffee, however I drink it maybe 3 times a week only, and usually I brew a 1/2 decaf blend with regular. Most times I drink a full decaf blend, or just have a decaf (herbal) tea. Helps that other people in my office like decaf (or don't know the difference).

I've noticed that coffee helps bring my numbers down if they are running a bit high. I haven't done enough testing to see how it would change my morning numbers if I quit. But often I hear more negative things about caffeine, although I'm not a believer.

I drink one cup in the mornings and don't generally see any effect. Like most other things with the D, I suspect it depends largely on the individual.
