| | | Milk Alternative At Wal-Mart, I buy Carb Countdown "milk". I've noticed that any type of actual milk you can buy, whether it's skim or whole, it all has 12g of sugar per cup. Milk drives my BG through the roof. So I found that Carb Countdown stuff (which you can buy in chocolate form also and has a little higher sugar and carb content than the regular) and it has only about 4 carbs per cup and 3g of sugar per cup. It tastes similar to skim milk. Doesn't have a whole lot of flavor, but works for cereal.

| | | I buy light soy milk (one kind is sweetened with Splenda and has very few carbs) or unsweetened almond milk (3g carb per cup).

| | | I was never excited about even trying soy milk. But I decided it's better than milk so I "sucked it up" and tried it. It's good, go ahead and check it out.

| | | I like 8th Continent Light Vanilla soy milk for cereal. The almond milk I buy is Almond Breeze. It comes sweetened or unsweetend and is available plain, vanilla or chocolate. I buy the unsweetened vanilla and use it mostly in hot cereal, even tea. I have never tried drinking it straight or pouring it over cold cereal, which I rarely eat. So, I can't even tell you much about the flavor since it's always mixed in with other stuff! The vanilla soy milk is good and I have used that on cold cereal or for making chocolate milk.

| | I like Silk brand unsweetened soy milk. Or, if I want to shoot a bit more insulin... unpasteurized goat milk! Yum, yum.

| | | Almond milk all the way!
I like the taste although I don't use it straight.
It is great for making sauses or adding to protein smoothies.
I use it to make fake alfredo sause for a fraction of the carbs but still very tasty and it lends some creamy-ness that water alone just can't do.
my mom uses on cereal and likes it just fine. I don't do grains so can't personally say on that one.
Not a fan of soy - as some say that is not so good for you, and personally I don't like the taste so much. |

| | I LOVE unsweetened Almond Breeze. If you decide to try almond milk, beware that not all brands are created equal. I recently tried one called Almond Dream, and it was pretty disgusting. The Almond Breeze is great, though, and I use it everywhere I used to use regular milk, including on cereal and for making chocolate milk!
Oh, and if you're having trouble finding the almond milk, it is not refrigerated--it is in a box-type carton with the other non-refrigerated soy milks, rice milks, etc., typically in the health food aisle. The cheapest I've found Almond Breeze is at Trader Joe's for $1.99/carton, so I'd check there if you have one in your area

| | | Most grocery stores in our area carry the Almond Breeze. It's O.K., but I do like the Hood's Calorie Countdown. Unfortunately, I can't find it in chocolate around here. Soooo, I make my own! Yes, it can be done. Simply mix 2 teaspoons Splenda with 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder in a cup with a dash of salt. Add 2 teaspoons water and stir until you form a paste of sorts and all the cocoa is moistened. Add milk and a dash of vanilla flavoring and stir. Yum, yum.
