| | | Anyone else with PCOS that can't lose weight? Hi! I'm new here. I was diagnosed with type2 a year ago. I've controlled my diabetes with diet and exercise. I've lowered my A1C to 5.7 and lowered my cholesterol and triglycerides to normal, yet I'm not able to lose any weight at all. Is there anyone else out there who also has PCOS and has had the same problem? My Dr. is always on my case about losing weight, but it's not like I'm not trying. I'm at my wits end and totally depressed. I need to find help to get the weight off...I just don't know what I can do besides diet and exercise. Oh, I need to lose 50lbs. |

| | Hey Amber,
I'm in practically the same boat as you with the PCOS and excess flesh, so to speak. I have a stone of weight to lose before the nurses in the Diabetic Clinic will get off my back. I'm trying to eat as little carbs as I can possibly manage without going crazy, walking like mad and basically not being a happy bunny about some things I like to eat . I've managed to lose a couple of pounds, but nothing drastic like they'd like. I'm due back to them at the start of next month and I'm just going to tell them that at least I'm not putting it up!

| | | Hi Amber, welcome. I think PCOS brings with it a lot of insulin resistance, which makes does make it a bit more challenging to lose weight. Has your doctor ever suggesting taking metformin? Metformin helps us better use the insulin we are making...and many of us actually make more insulin than we need, but our bodies can't properly utilize it. When my insulin resistance is high, I feel very hungry and have to really watch and make sure not to overeat.
One of the best things for insulin resistance is exercise. When I feel that gnawing hunger (and know I can't truly be hungry), i'll go for a quick walk and it does seem to help.
Since diagnosis (almost 2 years ago) i've lost around 70 lbs. I'm still considered overweight and have more to lose, but it has made a big difference in the way I feel.
Good for you for making all the positive changes you've made so far! Try not to be discouraged. You may lose weight more slowly than others, but you can lose it. Find something you enjoy doing (pilates, dance, walking, biking) and try and make it a habit.

| | | Hi, I am new here and have very similar issues to Amber. No solutions to offer (yet!!!) but just wanted to offer some solidarity. I can't find out much about about PCOS from the Joslin site or the Am Diabetes site, but here's an article I especially like about just PCOS

| | | I too am having trouble losing weight. Tuesday at my D class the educator said you need 30-40 minutes of walking b/4 you actually begin to burn fat. I guess I need to exercise longer but it is hard for me to find time to exercise that long at one time. I have to try for 3-4 10 minute sessions. Maybe I can do it on the weekend because I really do want to lose some of this weight

| | I too have PCOS.
The weight is coming off me. I just started cutting my carbs, eating moderate protein and not eating low fat anything. If you eat low carb you need some fat. Stay away from trans-fats though.
I'm down 8 lbs in under a month with no exercise. I have a bruised femur and now my ankle is giving me problems. So, honestly, I'm sitting on my rump or wobbling to and fro.
Taking the advice from everyone here - test...test...and test some more. It's my guideline.
