Thumbs up

I joined the gym and will start Tuesday!

I decided I was fed up of running like a headless chicken all the time (exhausting but doesn't keep you fit unfortunately) and ending up with no time for little ol' me. My family will have to realize I'm not on call 24/7.

Haven't decided what my routine will be yet. I want to do a bit of everything because I get bored easily. I can join Pilates classes too which is a bonus for me. Since hysterectomy addominals lost lots of strenght and I need help rebuilding it. Just don't know how to do it so I'm meeting with a trainer Tuesday.

Today's training will be : vaccuming and doing the floors (I've got lots!). Then working like a horse at work then back home for supper, laundry, taxi driver for the kids and so on........... and oh! It's my daughter's Sweet Sixteen Saturday and having the whole family over this week-end. So cooking, baking, and getting the house ready on top of everything. 20 people or so.

Gym will be a welcomed rest...

I walk 3 to 3-1/2 miles with my neighbor almost every night after dinner, year round! If it's raining or snowing too badly, then I am forced to walk the treadmill.

Up at 5:35 am. Two Adkins bars and coffee, with a Januvia/Metformin combo, Actos, fish oil and a vitamin. Then to the garage for 30 minutes of stationary bike and 50 one arm kettlebell presses (16Kg, with an extra 2.5 lb wieght attached) done in sets of 5. Total time is about 40 minutes.

Tonight, depending on what the blood sugars look like, I'll do more biking and maybe jump roping, to get my sugars down below 120.

This is my usual pattern, give or take, although tomorrow morning, I'll do kettlebell swings instead of presses with 2 of the 16's+2.5'ers for 250 total reps and 20 minutes of biking.

The Januvia seems to be working, BTW, at least so far...

This morning I went out for 30 minutes, 2 10-minute stretches of running in that.

Yesterday, I did a lot of stuff for my forearms and grip strength, grippers, an 18-lb. stone that I toss back and forth between my hands, I'll then pinch lift that same stone and carry it around, have a 1-lb. grip ball that I'll catch and release back and forth left-right-left-right as fast and explosively as I can, and some sledgehammer rotations, along with sets of chin ups.

30 minutes on the cross trainer, varying easy-going level strides with hard steep climbs.

weights:
2 x 15 leg press
2 x 15 hamstring curls
2 x 15 leg extensions
2 x 15 bicep curls
1 x 15 tricep extensions
1 x 15 tricep dips
2 x 15 side lateral raises
2 x 15 front lateral raises

floor:
16 forward crunches
32 bicycle crunches
16 oblique side bends

This is pretty usual of my workouts when I don't have classes or out hiking or something outdoors.

Yesterday for me:

Up at 6am - Get ready for work
7am - at work, cup of coffee and two boiled eggs
Noon - Ham Sandwich on whole grain bread and cup of chili
6pm - Home from work
6:30 - walked two miles in 30 minutes
7:30 - Dinner - turkey burger on slice of whole grain toast and cauliflower
8:30 - Walked another mile

I want to add weight lifting into my routine as i walk every day now about 2-3 miles. I've quit taking elevators at work and walk the 3 flights to my office several times per day. I also walk to talk to someone over calling or email as much as possible.

Kurt

18th May:5pm. 8km run/walk (100m climb)
I'm trying very hard to run all the hills but still can't manage it. It takes me longer to run them than walk them.

Friday, May 19th.

Ran 5.25 miles in 40 mins. in the raw, windblown rain. Wanted to go faster today but couldn't due to puddles, rain and running pants.

Signed up to run Half Marathon next weekend. First race since diagnosis. Not expecting great results, more curious about how I'll deal with my blood sugar levels.

Notey, You will do fine in the race. Keep some GU with you, and a hand bottle with some gatoraide. I check my am fingerstick and if I am in a normal range, I would take 1/4 of my basal. Now I am pumping so I just temp basal. Good luck! If you are anything like me, I am sure it will feel good just to be out there and competeing again.

Saturday, May 20th:

5.25 miles. Pretty much same as yesterday's run except it was drizzling and not pouring. ~40 mins.

Blood sugar was higher than usual this morning (131) but luckily didn't rise during run like it has been lately - it's been going from 90 to 130 during my runs - not a big deal, I know. I don't take much basal insulin so going low hasn't been a problem because I run before breakfast. That's why I'm concerned about racing long races because I generally like to consume at least a couple hundred calories a 2-3 hours before the race.
