Question exercise--water arobics

Hi, I'm new to forums--never used one before! I was diagnosed with T2 about 4 yrs ago and pretty much ignored it, but now am having symptoms so better get my act together! I go to a gym most mornings and have only been swimming there--boy am I out of shape!

My question is, does anyone know of specific water arobics exercises I can do? I have one bad shoulder so can't dop the regular crawl.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I'm off to look at the rest of your site here--Cheryl

Hello Sheryl and welcome!

I've done what they call 'aqua jogging' and really enjoyed it. I have a neck problem so had to be quite careful about the neck-shoulder area. It provided a really good workout, it was fun, the group was wonderful and it did me a lot of good. Without messing up my neck!

Usually, when you sign up for such classes (can be aqua fitness, etc), if you mention to your teacher you've got a problem area, they are always more than happy to (1) know about it and (2) give you specific exercices for you while the others may work on others. Ask about this before signing up! Ask the teacher. See if the person is quite sensitive about each student's specific needs. If not, go elsewhere. Really worth it to shop around. Sometimes you can even go see a few classes 'in action'. Gives you a better idea if you will be able to do it and if you will like it.

Hi, Thanks for the info!

There isn't a class at the gym I go to--was hoping just to be able to do it on my own. I am going to check at the library to see if there is a book or video on the subject. Right now I am just dogpaddling back and forth and doing a modified backstroke--gets my heart rate up, I can feel it in my biceps, triceps, and abdominal a little--all areas I definately need to work on. Was hoping for a little more variety, though.

Swimming is a lot more fun and relaxing than those darn machines!

... In my humble opinion, you get a really good workout in the water. And it's fun too!

Good luck Cheryl!

Cheryl, sounds like you are doing great! My grandmother does water aerobics every summer. She has bad arthritis and it seems to help. The water tends to support your joints so there isn't stress on them. I think as longa s you take it easier on your shoulder, exercise should be beneficial for it.
