I've started working out the last couple of weeks post-meal, which is better for my energy levels during the workout. In the past I've gone to the gym pre-meal 4 days a week, but I'm currently going twice a day 4 days a week, 40 minutes each visit, to burn more calories. I work out within an hour of eating.
I stretch, then do a 10 minute warmup on the treadmill/20 minutes on the elliptical to get my heart rate up to 145/10 minutes back on the treadmill to cool down. I also do light weights every other visit, but I've been focusing more on cardio lately.
Here's what's going on: I'll have a normal blood sugar reading premeal, then eat an average of 45 g carbs with some protein (but not meat--usually beans, soy or dairy). Based on "Think Like a Pancreas", I bolus for the meal at 60% of my normal bolus (normal bolus= 1:8). This works pretty well for the workout duration, but I'm getting what I suspect is a liver dump two to three hours after the workout, because my blood sugar will spike sometimes as high as 200. This seems to be happening pretty consistently for both post-lunchtime workouts and post-dinnertime workouts. My blood sugars otherwise stay in the normal range.
Any suggestions for getting a handle on this? Maybe I could up my basal rate in the 2-3 hours after working out? I don't know, taking more insulin before working out doesn't seem to make sense to me, because I'll get a low during the workout. Maybe mixing up cardio workouts with more weight-bearing stuff within one workout period would balance things out? I really enjoy the workout I'm getting with the elliptical and don't want to back down. Impart your wisdom, o mighty workout warriors!
