My turn to whine

I just can't believe it as for a month I have been keeping my carbs at 20 per day or less and walking 3 miles a day.

I am now walking 3.5 miles a day at a 15 min pace, this is not a walk any more it is a work out.

I am getting so frustrated as the scale seems to be frozen at 212 and will not move. I know that if I get my weight down my numbers will follow.

I know I have to keep doing what I am doing but with no progress showing it is starting to get difficult.

I am going to start checking my weight by proxy.

Schlep,
Make sure you get a good proxy!

At various times while I've been actively trying to lose weight, I noticed a steady drop of 5-10lbs and then plateau for weeks. What weight watchers (and others) say is when what you are doing stops working, do something else.

That could include vitamins, varying workout schedules and activities, adding a variety of foods that still meet your calorie/carb goals but kick up the taste buds.

Find a partner to work out with or even better compete with on the way to this goal. Someone to check in with and help keep you on track is invaluable.

After 5 weeks at around 225, I finally dipped below 220 and kept steadily at it until I was at 210. Very frustrating but eventually I made it.

Sclep, twenty carbs a day is not enough. If you cut your carb and calorie intake too low, you body goes into starvation mode. The other thing you need to consider is at your current activity level, you are burning fat, but gaining muscles. This is healthier, but your weight will not change.

Men should be taking in approximately 1800 to 2000 calories a day on a weight loss program. Up your carbs and continue your exercise. You will lose weight.

I tried a NO fat diet a couple of years ago before I went to Hawaii. I lost weight the first month and then completely stopped. I upped my exercise, cut more calories and fat and still could not budge the scale. When I told my doctor, she suggested that I was starving my body. I did as she said and increased my calories and fat in my diet, while continuing to exercise. I started losing weight again.

Good luck and good job in taking off the pounds.

Some years ago (before I was diasnosed) I lost alot of weight and hitting a plateau is can be fairly normal. I was attending Weight Watchers and counter intuitive as it may seem, sometimes when you plateau you need to eat more in order to lose weight.

I agree with Nancy, up what you are eating, keep exercising and the weight will start to move again. Bear in mind that nobody ever puts on a lot of weight overnight, yet for some reason we expect to lose it overnight. also, don't weigh yourself too often it can be discouraging, I found (and find) that about once a week is often enough. My final tip (from my WW days) which I'm employing now that I'm back losing weight, is you need to allow yourself a treat every so often. I used to give myself a small treat (a couple of fairly plain cookies) once a week.

Losing weight as a diabetic can be extremely difficult, especially for those on insulin. Slow weight loss rather than fast weight loss, generally gives you a better chance of keeping it off. Good luck and try not to get discouraged.

My money's on the new muscle offsetting the loss in fat. Are you losing inches?

Have you added more protein and fat than you've dropped in carbs? A gram of fat is 9 calories while a gram of carbs is only 4.

I hate scales. They don't give you a good idea of your progress. Better go with (1) how you're feeling overall and (2) how you fit in your clothes. When I started going to the gym on a reg basis my body changed but not so much on the scale. I feel so much better too!

I don't know how to translate it in English... (bear with me!) ... but when losing weight you always hit a 'plateau'. Your weight doesn't move. At all. It's as if your body is trying to make sense of what's going on. Quite normal I hear. A 'plateau' can be frustrating but then again... if your weight doesn't shoot up 7 to 10 pounds all of a sudden... and you still feel good... and BG is behaving... well I say you're still doing progress!

Take good care!
