Thanks | No taking insulin with only a protein shake post-workout could is exactly what you don't want to do. Your insulin will most likely work better since you've been exercising so you'll be more sensitive plus protein doesn't really raise your glucose at all so you could cause hypoglycemia. Now if your trying to add some muscle mass, add in a decent amount of carbs 30-50g pre and post workout and take some insulin to force those nutrients into your muscle during and after a workout, that could help you put on some good mass reasonably well since insulin is what allows nutrients to get into the muscle. |

| | | Hello everyone, my name is morgan and i have type 1 diabetes. I want to get into muscle building so i started some light weight lifting. My question is do i need to give my self extra shot of insulin before the work out to help the muscles utilizing glucose during and after the work out? Note i do drink a 8oz of carb drink after the work out. Any advise will help thanks |

I find my best performance at 130-150 BG level right before my workout, which seems to supply my body with enough glucogen to fuel my workout - typically when you workout your cells become sensitive to insulin - perhaps enough that your basal has some effect - but also it's speculated that other hormones like testosterone and IGF-1(which spike during exercise) actually stimulate the cells like insulin.
Insulin use after your workout is more useful (along with carbs and protein), and (YMMV) is the best time for me.
Please also note that your ratio of units-to-carbs may be significantly different (better) right after exercise.
For example, my ratios are:
Morning - 1:7
Afternoon - (lifting or no lifting) 1:10
Evening - 1:10 (no lifting), 1:15 (lifting)
Also, YMMV, anaerobic exercise seems to have a greater short term effect on insulin sensitivity as compared to aerobic, but aerobic seems to have a longer effect.
I've been experimenting with HiiT every Friday after my evening workout, and the aerobic effect of HiiT seems to cover me for most of the weekend making my insulin usage during the weekend (my off days) much more effective.

I tested before each workout, and took enough glucose to get me to a certain pre-workout BG range. I tried 120, 130, etc, etc. What I found is that having a 130-150 BG gave me the best performance for a 1 hour workout, and left me around 110 or slightly less afterward, perfect for my post-workout drink. What I can tell you is that I can TELL when I'm low, I simply can't lift as much.
So that's what I do. I test 30 minutes before working out, add as much naNO Vapor (12g carbs per scoop: so I add 1/2 scoop, or 3/4 scoop, or 1 scoop) as needed to raise me to 150.

| | I have always wanted to put protein supplement in my diet, i am seriously thinking about it, as you have mentioned above eating lots of food at meal times in order to cover protein need may become a depressive thing to do in longer periods. I'm working out 5 days a week and i'm really pushing my limits in weightlifting, i am type 1 as you do and i am wondering the quantity of protein that you are currently taking on pre and post workouts(as well as foods at meal times)as a brief schedule if it's not gonna be too much trouble for you ...thanks for advance.

| | I've decided to start training again
I just started my hockey season and I'm actually feeling great on teh ice. I feel like **** the next two days though. My eyes (proliferative retinopathy) are very stable now, finally. My goal is to suppliment my 2 ice times a week with another intense exercise, something not easily done in the Great White North. My main constraint is still my eyes, so I am not going to go hard or heavy. Second is hockey. That will determine my schedule. I haven't trained in something like five years, and I'm between ice times. I wanted to be able to move my body next time out. I'd like to do three a week, but I may only be able to do two.
So my first session last night lasted about 20 minutes. I did one very light set each of the folowing, not even to failure.
Squats
Leg Extensions
Leg Curls
Calf Raises (3 pos)
Bench Press
Bent Row
Military Press
Upright Row
Tricep Extensions
Bicep Curls
I felt not very stressed at all last night; however, I had to be peeled out of bed at noon today. Calves hurt.
Gonna continue for a couple of weeks at one set then advance to two then three following my body's lead.
Oh, I have a power rack with about 400lbs of standard weights and a decent bench. |

| | | Hello from Georgia Type 2 Diabetic, lift 3x week in Pooler, GA right outside of Savannah. Getting to the point that a power cage would be a good idea so I can lift to failure...at moment doing 4 sets of 8 to 12 reps. Interested in sharing workout routines. |

| | | Belly Fat I excercise pretty regular with intense weightlifting. However I can't for some reason get rid of belly fat. I do some cardio on stationary bike before every work-out.....nothing works!
Are Middle aged diabetics doomed to have belly fat.
