Before Working out????

What is an ideal snack for a Diabetic to have before a workout?

I was usually drinking a protein shake that contains 2.5 carbs and no sugar.

I think it depends on what sort of workout you are doing and for how long. I lift weights and will often have either a turkey and cheese sandwich on whole wheat or a protein bar. I like to have about 20 carbs before a workout. That is normally enough to get me through a 30 to 60 minute workout. If, for whatever reason, I am going to take a bike ride or a hike, I will go with 30 carbs or so and take a snack along, just in case.

I recently read that using a sports drink with added protein is helpful during workouts. Apparently it helps improve recovery time for the muscles. I suspect that none of the participants in the study were diabetic, though.

Back when I WAS excercising, we'd walk a 3 mile course in about an hour. I found that a Dannon Lite'nFit yogurt (approx 9 gms/carbs) and an oz of cheese did the trick most of the time.

I have major issues here. I just posted somewhere else, but I can drop over 200 easily when I run. I can never seem to figure it out. I atea whole bag of skittles yesterday without taking any insulin and had only run 3 miles before it dropped to 31! I feel like I am constantly eating the calories I burn.

i do alot of sport, and find the best thing for me is lucozade sport. an energy drink. i sip a bit of this all through my exercise, i think checkin your blood every so often during exercise will get you used to how much of hte drink you need in comparison to you current blood level and time/intensity of the exercise to be done.

and please drink lots of water!!!

How long does the drop take? Your blood sugar level was about 230 before you began to run, and then when you are done it's 31? That does seem dramatic...Oh, depending on your insulin regimen, was your long-lasting or short-lasting (or both) peaking (or do you pump)?

When I run after work I will eat a Little Debbie brownie. About 35 grams of carbs, alittle high in fat but very long lasting. Then I test when I finish & correct if I have to, but mostly not much.
I can get about a 6 mile run out of one of these, even if I was a little low at the start.

I asked my dietician what the proper procedure was and she said
we are all unique so do what works best for you.

Before cardio exercises I would drink a cup of orange juice for a
fast simple carb pick me up and follow it with a zone bar 40/30/30
so I had some complex carbs to last awhile longer. If I exericse 1 hr. cardio and 1 hr. wts I still have to test as I come down
real fast after and need more juice to pick me up off the floor so to speak.<smile>

Anyhow, this is what works for me and I'm a type one.
I also drink lots of water during the workout as I think
that's important also.
