Question Hi, new to these forums..!

Hi all! I am new to these particular forums..but, unfortunately NOT new to having diabetes(I have type two).
I walk a lot for my "excercise"..would like to know how long some of you excercise..I know that we all have to be really careful with regards to excercising..because we could get sick and or pass out..so, how do you all excercise if you do stuff like weight training or heavier types of excercising? How long do you work out, or do you have a special routine that you do, at a gym? Do you take snack breaks or naps and then go back and excercise again, or what?

Thanks! luvscoco99

luvscoco99,

I currently weight train three times a week. I low carb, but generally eat before my sessions which last 1-1.5 hours. Usually my blood sugar rises from weight lifting. I'll do cardio 2-3 times a week, elliptical trainer or mowing. I rarely go low even with extended sessions. As you get more practiced, you will understand you body and how it responds to exercise. Unless you have medical complication such as a heart condition, you should not have a problem. Start with measured efforts, don't overdo it, do something you enjoy and build things up. Good luck.

Wink Thanks for the help! and a little more story...

I usually only walk..but, I have two small weights that I can use..I also have yoga and other excercise videos(but, all I usually do, is walk..and oh yeah, carry a TON of groceries up the stairs and or when I shop..and I tend to go shopping a lot..I carry a lot home or lately have taken a cab..but, I do walk and carry a LOT at times, anyhow! I think that it makes me stronger...but, I will admit that my arthritis is hurting me something BAD right now, so, that is really NOT a great sign at this point!
(I have mild fibromyalgia and mild lupus too besides the diabetes type two!)

There are times that I get "Flare ups"...and right now is no exception! I am not sure if the weather is what "really" affects those with arthritis types of illnesses..because some doctors say that the weather has NOTHING to do with our aches and pains that we get when the weather changes...Hmmm! I really wonder about that..ya know?
But, because of the weather where I am now...it is cloudy and humid..and then it pours down..and then it is nice and sunny again..and VERY HUMID!!
and well, this cycle starts all over again! You never know what the weather is going to do!!

So, at this time..I am "resting" as in taking it a bit slower...and for me to take things slow..trust me, that is sooo NOT me! LOL!!
I tend to want to be "out and about" but, when I do not feel great..it can be difficult to PUSH myself outdoors!!

I had a grilled cheese sandwich and a whole Mango..and then, and here is where I am not sure if my sugars were good or not..I felt kind of "yukky" because of my bones..and or whatever was making me feel just plain "blah!" and could not concentrate..so I took a nap ..and I slept for five hours!! I had slept the night before..but, I find that with the diabetes..(and even before I was ever diagnosed with this disease this same stuff happened to me) that I would get very sleepy!
I tend to either fall asleep when I A. have not had ANY food yet, and or B. Ate too much!

Do you have that issue or not?

or anybody else out there..?

I am usually "better" when I am out walking around..although, it tends to depend though!

But, I guess with the three differerent diseases...I am just gonna have to learn how to figure out how to deal with being awake more often..and how much excercising I can do, without conking out on myself or another person! LOL!
I usually do okay..but, I do have moments where I honestly feel like going to sleep! UGH!!
NOT good!!

(The sleeping used to happen a LOT more, way before I was ever diagnosed...and here I thought that either I had not gotten a ton of sleep, or that I was sitting in the car in the sunshine..and the sunlight was making me very drowsy!!! Little did I know that it was most probably the diabetes!!!! )

hi there.

that lunch sounds pretty high in carbohydrates!

are you measuring your blood sugar?

are you on medication(s).

have you had an hba1c test and what was the result?

-- Joel.

PS High blood sugars can make you very drowsy......

Arrow Maybe I was not supposed to have the whole mango...

maybe you are right on that ...I need to find out how many carbs are in a mango or how much sugars are in them...I don't really know!!

ALso, I probably should have eaten only half that sandwich too!

oops!

I do have whole sandwiches..but, I also try to eat only the half of one as well...I am off and on a diet! LOL!!

I am on N and R Novolin..mostly only the N...(cloudy)..that I take only in the mornings and evenings...I only need to take the clear, if I had high sugars..and lately I have been okay!!

I chose to not take the pill forms...I really do not like the fact that the meds make you feel sick to your stomach...(I am pretty sensitive..and some meds that I have been on in the past, for other items..made me feel sick ALL of the time! I would rather just stick myself with the needle..and take my insulin!) My doctor and I discussed this..and she said that this was okay for me to do!!)

I do watch what I eat..although, I am NOT the greatest but, I do try to not eat too much..lately, because my doctor gave me more meds (as in a higher dose of the insulin...I have been lower a LOT in my blood sugars....and so, when I
"Think" that I have eaten the "Right amount" of a meal..I find out that I am still starving..and I check my blood sugars and I am a bit low! So, I just have a snack..and that helps me a bit..but, yeah, with regards to the mango...I should see about that fruit!!
