Can't get my bg's right when I run....

I've started running again recently, and I can't seem to get my bg's right.

Today I was 144, drank a gatorade (28grams of carb, I think), and turned off my pump. By mile two I was 110, and I ate three packs of goo (27 grams of carb in each pack). Mile 2.5 I was 97, ate a fourth goo. Mile three, still 97, bought and drank another gatorade.

Finished after 5.5 miles at 150.

Now, that is a ****load of carbohydrates -- 135 grams. And I only ran 5.5 miles.....slowly. Engine seems to be running a little hot.

Last week, I started a run at around 290 and I never went down at all. Actually went over 300 for a while.

WTF!?

Any suggestions?

That does seem like a load of carbohydrate to need. Of course, you do realize that the peak effect time of insulin being infused sub-q is approximately 1.5 hours after it gets infused -- so while you will begin to see some reduction in insulin activity if you suspend your pump right prior to running, you've still got that lagtime of 1.5 hours covering you. So that's one thing to remember if you're using a pump, if you need a lower basal rate for exercising, I think many pumpers find they need to reduce the basal action 1 to 1.5 hours beforehand.

As far as the prior week when you started running when you were up at 290, I think many of us have experienced that effect of where the blood sugar is that high and there's a factor of insulin resistance when the body is out of sorts like that. Personally, if I were up at 290, I probably wouldn't run. Sometimes working out involves knowing when not to work out if your physical condition isn't ready for it. For regular people that can be about fatigue or something else. As diabetics we've got the regular people concerns but the blood sugar one has to be accounted for too. If you're up at 290, something has gone wrong and trying to get that wrong fixed and then adding in the variable of running can make things a bit too complicated to handle in a reliable and safe way. But that's my opinion.
