| | Weight Lifting, and protein supplements... Hey just had a quick question. I started working out pretty hard maybe about 5 months ago, lifting lot of weight and bulking up a bit.
I was just wondering if it was safe for a diabetic to take a protein powder type of thing, but it's not just protein. There is a lot of other stuff in it.
Here's a link to the exact product. Buy Body Fortress Super Advanced Whey Protein Powder, Chocolate Online at drugstore.com
Just being on the safe side and wondering if should take it or not, I only took it for a couple weeks, then decided to make sure..
Thanks everyone in advance! |

| | | I've been taking Whey Protein for a while myself, and there have been no adverse effects.
I discussed it with my endo (and my gastro) and they said that my bloodwork had been coming back fine, so they saw no reason why I shouldn't. Besides, there's so many foods I can't eat, so the supplement helps that cause too!
I did take a look at the label of the brand you've been taking and it sayd 6g carbs (incl 3g sugar). While that's nothing spectacular, you might want to look for something less carby? The one I take claims to have 2g carbs (incl 1 sugar) per serving.
Of course, make sure you test a few times 1, 2, and 3 hours after you take it to see how your body's dealing with it. If all seems well, then you're good to go!

| | | My endo said I didn't need to take protein supplements, because the insulin would make me buff. |

| | | I've had Type I for over 20 years and have been lifting weights and taking protein and vitamin supplements for most of that time. The only thing I ever noticed was that creatine gave me cramps. I did some checking, and that seems to be a common side effect. Recently, I've stopped taking all supplements just to see if I notice any change in my energy levels and/or muscle gains. So far I've not noticed a big change. Good luck with your training. |

So, as long as you adjust your insulin for that sugar, you should be fine.
In the supplements thread on this exercise forum, I've posted what I use as supplements - its a home made creatine stack that works really well. There is no reason what I person with diabetes can't use supplements such as whey protein, creatine, etc... Also, have a look at the thread for diabetic weight lifters, bodybuilders, etc... at the top of the page.

A workout buddy of mine takes Isopure, which supposedly has zero carbs, so you might want to check that out.
Whatever you end up choosing, I'd suggest checking with your doctor / trainer / nutritionist. And a lot of trial-and-error with your BS monitor of course!

| | | panic supplement! I grabbed the lowest sugar, highest protien, lowest carb count, with a modicum of other advantageous minerals jsut the other day at Trader Joes... It sure tastes like cardboard, but a little Splenda, goat/yak yogurt, mini-wheat/all grain granola stuff and a sliced banana... well, it really sticks to my bones... and its actually OK tasting with all the adds.... plus its fairly high in Na, K, Niacin, other trace minerals etc....actually had better numbers than the Pro shop Muscle Max varieties at 1/2 the $$$..
As a reference i WAS consuming close to prob. 3000 cal. per day, heavy biker/commuter.. 4 days a week, hard core mtn. ridin on wkends, go go go around house and home. lots of swimmin.
I had some serious tradgedy on June 5th, then DX'd TI or so 2weeks ago....got scared of muscle loss in legs etc. decided I HAD to stay estra low carb and extra low sugar... so, at least I am feeding the muscle more properly...as I slowly get back on the bike and keep weight training!!!
anyone have suggestions on heavy trainning and low carb intake/ no sugar ? |

anyone have suggestions on heavy trainning and low carb intake/ no sugar ? | I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. I'm sure that you will feel better when you get back to training. I don't know about heavy bike training, there are others like Ronin that can give you good advice. I do weight training as a type 2, but you may need to manage a bit differently as a type 1. Pumper will chime in no doubt. I see him over at t-nation as well.
I find that heavy weight training actually causes my blood sugar to rise. I've never had a low. I've not had any problem being carb or glycogen depleted. I've worked out a lot while in ketosis without a problem. You may find that adaptation to a lower carb diet will initially leave you tired and feeling lethargic, but that will pass.
I have found it a challenge to properly manipulate post workout nutrition to get good gains. I seem to only get good gains with a post workout carb/protein mix. You may need to tune things a bit with insulin to properly manage your levels and recover properly. There is some thought that actually insulin after a workout is very anabolic.
ps. Don't forget to squat

| | | I have been lifting on and off for 5 years now. I took Creatine, and at my last visit with my Endo, my Creatinine levels were elevated. She said why are you making your kidneys work harder than they have to. I have noticed since I stopped taking Creatine I have lost muscle mass. Does anyone know of supplements that do not affect your kidneys??? |

I'm a diabetic bodybuilder too. I use insulin (also) to build muscle since it is legal for me to do so. I've gotten good results from that.
Also, I use creatine and a bunch of other supplements. |
