Climbing & Insertion points

I have been rock climbing for several years. I have been using an insulin pump for about two years and am still trying to figure out how to integrate the two.

I have always used the Silhouette but I am now trying the Quick Set. I have always inserted in my hip and have found decent spots where my harness will not effect the insertion point. However, I have recently been told that I must use other sites, due to scar tissue. I am leaving for Yosemite, in one week, to spend 4 days on the side of a rock wall. Needless to say, I am a bit nervous about where to insert the infusion set. Has anyone experienced this and figured out a place that works well with their climbing harness?

Although I am not an avid climber myself, I have been before and have many climbing friends. I would suggest your upper abdomen or love handles if you have enough fat. You could also try a thigh site on the upper outer surface as long as you are careful when stepping into and out of the harness.

A back of the arm site is another option, but I'm not sure how that would work out, especially if the pump is at/near your waist (eg. cord pulling) or due to sweat issues. Have a great trip. I love Yosemite.

Thanks Kendall, I really appreciate the feedback. I am considering the upper thigh. It will have to be somewhere the harness will not interfere since I will be living in the verticle for 4 days. I will go try that area out today.

When I first started backpacking with my new pump, I had belt issues similar to the climbing harness. I used my butt a couple times. Bled more, but no rubbing!

Infusion set placement

When I climb iIuse my upper abdomen and it hasn't been a problem. All the tubing remains under my shirt or jersey. However, I'm developing a preference for the Shilloutes over the Quick Sets. I sweat when I climb, and I've had a problem with the Quick Sets detaching; I believe it is easier for them to detach since they can pull straight out. Good luck.
