| | | Exercise while sick? I've come down with a nasty cold/flu thing, and feel really awful. Should I drag myself onto the treadmill and do my exercise anyway, or will that only make me sicker?
Before diabetes, I would have taken a break while sick, but because of the importance of exercising when you have diabetes, I'm wondering if I should do it anyway.

| | | I'd focus on getting well, and exercise when you feel better. Your body is already under stress because of your cold symptoms. It won't hurt you to take time off when your sick. Rest and keep yourself well-hydrated.
Don't be surprised if you BS levels are elevated as well...anytime I feel ill, my blood sugars react to the physical stress by elevating.
Hope you're feeling better soon!

Yeah, my blood sugar numbers have been a bit odd since I came down with this cold. What I'm finding is that my fasting numbers are slightly higher than usual for me, but my post-meal numbers aren't. So what that means is, I'm not seeing much difference at all between my fasting numbers and my post-meal numbers. I'm just always hovering around 5.5 or thereabouts. Weird.
(By the way, I took my meter to the pharmacy yesterday and had them check it, and it's fine. It's me that's wonky, not the meter. )

| | | Hi Amelie!
For me, I exercise with a cold as long as it is just the stuffy-head and runny-nose. However, the minute that I show a fever -- no exercise.

| | | I take it easy for the first two or three days. Like Ronin, once I'm just left with the stuffy nose and cough, I start exercising again.

| | | Well, I haven't been on the treadmill in a couple days, because as my cold has worsened, I find that I can hardly breathe. I went to the doctor today and was diagnosed with asthma. For goodness sake, I go 34 years of my life in relatively good health and now all of sudden I've been diagnosed with 4 different diseases over the course of half a year. My body is falling apart. I'm feeling a bit depressed now. I suppose depression is the next thing I'll be diagnosed with.

| | | Amelie,
If you just have a stuffy nose or something, then fine, try to do your normal exercise. But, it you are sick, do not exercise. It won't do you any good, it won't help your diabetes, it may even make you sicker and hinder your recovery. What are you some masochist. Did Arnold call you some girlie-man? Seriously, when you are sick you need to rest, not stress your body.
That is my story and I am sticking with it.
ps. Lots of people get depressed, and you got some real stuff to put up with. Take a few days to pamper yourself and get better.

| | My cold is getting worse. I haven't been on the treadmill in three days. And today, I had my highest blood glucose reading since I got my blood glucose monitor a few weeks ago. This is the first time since I started self-testing that it's been above the "normal" range. My fasting blood glucose was 6.9 today. I feel really miserable about this. I don't know if it's the lack of exercise or the illness stressing my body or both. I was doing so well, too, and then I had to go and get sick. I'm really miserable right now.
From my frequent testing, I have learned that what I eat doesn't seem to make a difference in my blood sugar. It's stress. The highest readings I've gotten have been after my mother-in-law calls and when I'm sick. As long as I'm not under stress (physical or emotional) my numbers are fantastic. How does one go through life avoiding stress though?
