Exercise and Diabetes type II

Does anyone knows which is the best form of exercise for a type II diabetes? I am having quite high numbers right now and unable to bring it down. Also, which is the best bread for diabetics? Thanks.

aerobic exercise is probably the best. (running, tread mill, etc.) Whole grain breads are usually best, but I understand that sour dough and pumpernickel are also pretty good---stay away from plain white bread. (also other things that are white such as white potatoes, white rice, etc.)

Aerobics and resistance combined will give the best results. Aerobics improves the cardiovascular system improving the heart muscle. Resistance improves the rest of your muscles and muscle tone. There seems to be little or no emphasis placed on muscle tone for type 2 diabetes. Good muscle tone will burn more calories, or glucose, when your at rest than a muscle that sees little activity. Good muscle tone is with you 24 hours a day.

Bread I went without my first year. Just could not tolerate it well. Since then a whole multigrain bread once a day maybe okay some days and others send me higher than my target. Bread is not something I will eat when I am high.

I recommend frequent and vigorous exercise. Variety is good but if less variety still works for you then fine. You want both, strength training and cardio. Hit the biggest muscle groups for greatest effect but be sure to work them all from time to time. If you're not sweating, you ain't doing it right. Be patient, don't expect quick results. Find a routine(s) that you can sustain long term.

Mostly I just skip bread. Sometimes I use low carb wraps for a substitute. I agree that sourdough or rye/pump are better than most. Making your own bread is another option, go for grainy peasant type recipes. The whole grains, or less pulverized grain flours will have lower glycemic indexes which is what you want. Ultimately testing BG is the only way to know what works best for you.

By the way... Hi. Welcome to DF!

Hi Salimdost!

A good exercise program is one that contains elements that you like to do and that also raise your heart rate, make you sweat, strengthens your muscles, and that you can maintain for upwards of an hour or more just about every day.

Breads for diabetics? There are some low-carb-high-fiber breads on the market I get one from "The Baker" that has only 5 grams of carbs per slice.

Best exercise - whatever will get you moving everyday. That said, it's good to combine aerobic exercise and strength-training (mind you, not necessarily weight-training).

Best bread - whole wheat bread, rye, anything with grain that has not been pulverized into fine flour; but, in any case not too much of it.

Welcome to the forums. Walking, swimming, golf, cycle - the best exercise is a form that will keep your interest and so you will keep doing it. Just be careful, if your numbers are high (above 200) it is generally not advised to exercise.

As far a bread is concerned, bread tends to be high in carbs and so people tend to be very careful about the type and amount they eat. I have found a local wholemeal bread, which in small quantities works well for me.

If you could tell us more about you, where you are, what meds you take, how long you are diagnosed, you recent numbers/levels and how you manage your diabetes - people may be able to offer more help.

If you are a newly diagnosed T2 then I would recommend the book "The First Year: Type 2 Diabetes" by Gretchen Becker, it is easy to read and very informative.

Hi, and welcome to DF. I am new as well. When I was first diagnosed, I went for a brisk 3 mile walk in the morning and my BG would go up 20 points. So I thought that exercise was no good!! Then I started on the eliptical at the gym and over a few months I can do 9 miles in an hour. Now my BG can drop from 160+ to below 100 on a regular basis.

Bread- I like Ezekiel bread from Trader Joes. No flour, low GI.

Good luck!

Walking helped me a lot at first, but it's too dark to walk in the morning and when I get home at night, so I use an elliptical machine. That works really well, especially right after dinner if I've eaten more carbs than I should. It helps bring things down pretty fast.

I have been using Nature's Own double fiber bread -- in moderation -- and that doesn't seem to spike my bg levels too much.

Wrestling with a car battery works quite well. LOL.

Was having issues with my battery the last couple weeks, so I had the battery tested at an auto parts store today, then had to change it out for a new one...about 10 minutes later, I went LOW! (and this was before my morning meds & after breakfast!)

Now, my battery is a pain to deal with as it's in a tight corner & has to be maneuvered just right to avoid touching side-post connectors to other metal parts around it, but I didn't realize it would qualify as enough exercise to do really drop my BS levels! Sheesh!

Luckily the auto parts store was right next to a restaurant. Chinese...yum!

Just goes to show you how broad the definition of exercise is. Exercise after all is the activity of moving your muscles. It's not limited to walking, running, or whatever sports is popular at the moment. You don't even have to a gym member.

This reminds me of something that happened years ago ....

When I was a teenager, I and friends climbed up a volcano in the Philippines. Climbing with us were young local boys whose job was to haul supplies to the restaurants up the mountain. I and my girl friends were admiring the bulging muscles of these local boys carrying heavy boxes on their shoulders. Our city-grown boyfriends asked them whether they went to the gym regularly and what training program/principles they used. Needless to say, the local boys burst out laughing and we girls were red with embarrassment. My girl friends and I decided to find boys with brain between their ears!

The only exercise I can do day in day out is the exercise I like. I don't like running, so running won't work for me. I am lucky I love biking and live in a place where I can bike every single day (unless it rains) with a look to the sea
