| | | How Much Exercise Do People Here Do? Since I've been diagnosed, I've been doing 20+ minutes on a stationary bike at least 3 times per week. I do this as soon as I wake up, before I eat anything (I'm not on medications).
I also take walks during lunch, weather permitting.
I'm thinking about killing the lunchtime walks and replacing with 30 minute workouts instead. I'm thinking 3 days per week of weight training.
Is this over the top? I need to lose weight and I've radically changed my diet since diagnosis (I can post my diet if anyone's interested) but I haven't lost weight. I've reduced my morning sugar readings from low 150's to low 120's (hit 120 on the nose this morning, my lowest reading yet!).
So, what do you folks do for exercise? Am I going over the top here? |

| | | I posted a couple of suggestions for you in the Carbs and Calories thread.
Up your workout to at least 30 minutes 5 or more times a week.
I am currently doing the treadmill thing, 40 minutes M-F at around 2.8-2.9 mph, and on weekends, 1 hr at the same speeds (working my way up to 3 mph).
If you can, talk w/ a dietician - they are great sources for help in this area.

| | I have a dietitian appointment scheduled for Wednesday the 24th, just in time for Thanksgiving! Hopefully she can give me some pointers as well.
Yea, I know I need to ride 5x per week. That was my original goal but 3x per week is all I've been able to pull off so far. I'll definitely give it more effort.
Thanks for your replies HeatherP. |

| | | The secret to exercise is getting your heart rate elevated and maintaining it at least 15-30 minutes. a good cardio-vascular will not only help you lose weight, but also help your heart.
Also, don't forget that you will be gaining muscle mass at the same time you lose the fat. If the workouts you are thinking about are weight training you will only increase the amount of muscle mass. While this is a good thing for many reasons, you still need to lose the fat. Intense cardio (if you can handle it) or very long period low impact are the best things for this.
Be sure to continue to eat. Change your diet, add more high-fiber carbs, and less fat and simple carbs/sugars. If you stop eating all together(well almost-you know what I mean) you will kick your metabolism into low gear. Your body will begin a famine cycle and actualy start putting on weight. **** that evolution, I wish it would catch up quicker, lol.
Good luck.

| | When I was at school we had 3 games lessons a week consisting of 45minutes... I didnt find this enough as I LOVE sport... so i would be out at every opportunity, though it would be more to do with swimming.
But now at home as I dont have a swimming pool i tend you go on daily walks/jogs with the dog and tend to do up to 8miles depending on my mood, but if I dont do some exercise in the day I feel that I have let myself down... even though I am allowed a break some days!! (it sounds like an obsession but it isnt, I just prefer been outdoors doing some sort of exercise than sitting about at home..)

| | Bel, I don't think your routine is too extreme. I do more than that and make sure I eat 1400-1500 cals per day and I am doing good. Keep up the good work. If the lows are a prob try doing your exercises after work or about an hour after eating or after a light snack. I do mine at about 5-6 pm and it doesn't keep me up at night. I also am increasing my workouts to around 30-45 minutes a day 5-6 days a week. I do treadmill or pilates cardio with light weights and ab toning. But I rotate them so not to do toning everyday. Whew that was a huge mouthful! LOL BTW BEL we just got 5 inches of snow last night! EEEK more today!! Brrrr

| | I go to the gym everyday, it's something I feel really helps me stay on track in terms of my diabetes control and helps me deal with stressful issues. LIke, UCOchick, I really have to work at staying in good shape, especially since I really like to eat . I'm also 5'8, but a little more than 135 (I wish I was though - How do you do that? and are you on insulin, Ucochick? ) but I am trying to realize that being healthy and in shape means more than just being at a lower weight.

I love that thing. My mom has one (which has a layer of dust on it) that I've been trying to smooch off of her for ages. She won't part with it. lol May have to break down and get one of my own. Not exactly something I'd like to use while in front of our large family room window in public view, however.

| | | rzrbks,
The HealthRider is great! I have an older model than yours. Mine doesn't allow for adding weights. I've always hoped they would come out with a refit for my model. I find that the HealthRider gives me a good mix of aerobic and resistance training. The resistance isn't a substitute for weights, but is much better than nothing.

| | Hi Bass: I do the almost same as usual. I run the treadmill for 25
minutes and fast -dance to my fave fast dance music since I love
dancing for 25 minutes 5 times a week. In the spring, summer and fall(warm-hot weather) I walk around our big block with my Hubbie or bike with my daughter for 6 blocks usually(I am not sure how I will replace the 2 latter yet because of the cold weather).

| | | I just set up an exercise room recently. (Kids moved out, can you tell?) I have a treadmill, weight bench and recumbant bike and a satelite tv set up in my room. It is my winter refuge. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
