Hi and welcome to the forums. It would probably help if you shared some more information about how you are managing your diabetes, are you taking any medication?

I would recommend you get a book called "The first year -Type 2 diabetes" by Gretchen Becker, I found it easy to read and very informative.

As far as what to eat to control your BS levels. The best way to develop your own diet is to test, test, test. Testing is the key to learning what foods work for you and which are best avoided. If you test before each meal and the 2 hours after first bite you will learn how what you ate impacted on your BS.

Personally I find eating low carb works for me, it doesn't work for everyone. I tend to avoid things like rice, pasta, white bread and potatoes as they are very high in carbs.

My targets for BS levels are:

Fasting (morning): < 6.1 (110)
2 Hours after first bite: <7.7 (140)

If you are not at those numbers, don't panic, you can and will get there.

Ask lots of questions and you will learn quickly,

Dave has outlined lots of basics for you. Diet varies from person to person. The basic is that you should eat low carb diet which will help you. Avoiding refined sugar or flour is good. White rice, white bread etc are bad Try whole grain products instead.

wow. broad question.

there are four caloric main food groups. carbohydrate, protein, fat and alcohol.

GENERAL RULES
---------------
all carbohydrate raise BG fast.

protein raises BG slowly and not as much as carbohydrate (gram for gram).

fat and alcohol have little effect on BGL levels.

you need to test and see what each type of food does to you specifically. if your blood glucose is higher than you want you need to consume less carbohydrate and protein, increase the amount of insulin in your bloodstream or increase the sensitivity of your body to insulin. or all three of the above...

therefore, as you can see no general diet rules exist. you need to tell us more about what your levels are, how often you test, what supplements or meds you take and what you eat...
