| | | Hi Barb,
I think it really depends on the individual and his or her schedule. The most important thing is to pick a time that you can make available with regularity. By making exercise a regular part of the schedule, you are more likely to stick to it.
Now, with that said: Much of what I have read suggests exercising before mealtime. Supposedly it helps reduce appetite.
I generally ignore that suggestion. Exercising in the evening, after dinner, works better for me.
Whatever time you choose, be sure to monitor closely. Often, I find it necessary to have a snack before bed on nights when I work out.

| | | Hello Travis,, That is just what I thought...I do mine in the AM after breakfast and again in the evening if I have time...Tom my husband and I also do a lot of walking...never drive if we can walk...another question how long after exercise do you test your blood? I understand that right after exercise is when our blood sugars is at it's highest...

I have had my blood sugars bottom out both while lifting weights intensely and while doing cardio, while I have read others here state that one or the other seems to crank their blood sugars way up. The trick is to figure out which type you are...
I find if I can get my butt out of bed and do cardio in the morning, my sugars run lower and I require less insulin all day.

| | It definitely helps me to eat prior to exercising. I'm a bottom-outer. If I'm going to exercise, I have to be sure that I have snacks handy. This usually requires wearing one of those annoying fanny-packs.

| | I'm with Angie on this one. I have to keep food handy when I exercise. It can be a bit annoying to be working outside and have to stop to gobble a granola bar or something, but we do what we must.
This past year we have become accustomed to hauling all the stuff that goes with having a baby. When I compare all that to a fanny pack or other small bag, it isn't so bad!

| | ... I noticed something : exercise in the evening has very little (if at all!) impact on fasting sugars. And since exercise makes me hyper and prevents me from going to sleep for hours, I gave it up. The only thing that will relax me in the evening is Pilates so I stick to that. Exercise in the morning and at the beginning of the afternoon is the best time for me. Before or after meals? I can't exercise right after a meal. Just can't.
Just a quick note about Pilates : I love it! Have done a 5 week course and about to start another one in about two weeks. It has rid me of back pain and other problems that had been lingering since I suffered a prolapsed disc last year. I will either do a bit of Pilates before and/or after exercise too. I wish I had discovered Pilates years ago...

| | | Hi Barb,
I am a big fan of pilates and yoga. Pilates can be done at home, with a mat (I once even used a lawn chair cushion) and it is great for back pain. There is actually a Pilates for Idiots video tape (yes, this is the one I did using the lawn chair cushion). Yoga is also great, low impact, good for back pain and can be done at home. There must be a million different Video's websites and classes for both Pilates and Yoga. You should definietely be able to find a method that suits you perfectly. Happy hunting.
Oh, btw, I do yoga in the morning and at night before bed. I am not diabetic, but at night I do a very "low key" yoga session so that I can easily drift into a blissful sleep (well, sometimes it works).

| | | Lee...Oh I do like it already..love those at home work outs lol...Well I will certainly look into it..sounds like something I can do..and they have it for Idiots...oh ya that's what I would need lol I have no trouble falling a sleep my trouble is staying a sleep...Maybe the yoga will help me sleep all night...
Marie...I hear ya about evening workouts not helping lowering Blood Sugars...I have noticed the same thing as well....I sometimes do it just to feel better when I have a stressed out day I like a good work and a hot shower for relaxing
