Big question

Ok I am a Firefighter but I am also a retired powerlifter.
I was forced into retirement by a pinched nerve in my neck.
Well I was in the process of having it fixed and it's not as bad as we thought. So I was going to pull a Brett Farve and come out of retirement. Well doing all the pre-training test we found my A1C to be high and I'm a Type II. Because I'm trying to bulk up a little more should I have my Testostrone level checked? I am 42. Also is it hard to pack on muscle at a Type II? I haven't lost any that I was holding on to.

Thanx for any help!!!

Oh also my Doctors say I'm kicking Butt in getting my numbers (Sugar, A1C, LDL ETC.) where they should be.

I have heard that all diabetics can successfully build muscle. However, seeing as how I'm trying to get my weight down at the moment, I may not be very knowledgeable in this area.

Great job on getting those numbers down though!

Way to go! Check out "the diabetic athlete" by Sherri Colberg for details. She lists exactly what happens and why.

Hello Bull, returning to your dream is a big commitment and I would think that you can and look at the good carbs and the protein that will help you gain mussle mass and strength. With the type 2 you will have the ability to get a low. I guess you know about this allready. It's attchiveable I think. I would test more often and with the meter, Run a journal with your experiences like the meals that you eat, Activity, and tests. What this will do you can then say that bread don't agree with you or a particular activity as that will give an idea of what to do later in your quest to your dream.
Q: What can you lift in a snatch?

Is that you in the image?

You're not a classic type 2. I recommend getting yourself tested for type 1.5.

It might well be a good idea to ask to have your testosterone levels checked, considering your age and diagnosis of type 2, as I believe lower testosterone levels is a problem in some due to the metabolic dysfunction that's going on. I also think that xMenace's suggestion about type 1.5/LADA merits some consideration.

But you should be able to build muscle if you keep good control of your blood sugars and eat a reasonable diet.

I agree with those above, Bull. You don't seem to fit the classic type 2 profile.

Classic T2's tend (and yes, this is a generalization which doesn't fit *every* T2) to be overweight because of insulin resistance causing a cycle of trying to satisfy carb cravings followed by the excess insulin causing more cravings, etc. Although now, possibly because it's being caught earlier in many cases, that's not always the case.

That's great!

As for the 42-inch waist size, it's hard to say without knowing you - I'd ask your doc what a "healthy" weight range would be for you.
