Could be a question of the physiology of the exercise in both. I'm not too clued up on this, but I'd say it could be that field hockey uses different muscle fibres than squash, which results in a slower rate of glucose absorption to squash. Therefore your liver and brain has more time to react, which means it releases more glucose into your liver to cope with the extended play, hence a rise in BG.

if my sugar is normal before a hockey game, I would normally inject 1 or 2 units of humalog. Is this okay, other than being a little dangerous?

I think you've answered your own question there - 'is this ok, despite being dangerous'?!
Personally I wouldn't inject before playing sport if I was running normal sugars, because to be honest the prospect of me dropping dead or having a hypo when I'm playing really doesn't appeal. I would have thought you would find that your bg level, even if a bit high after playing hockey, would drop rather quickly soon afterwards as your muscles use the bg for recovery.
If you are able to get on with your day without any problems after injecting before playing hockey then you're probably ok but I really wouldn't recommend it because there's simply far too much at stake.
