Exercise and weight gain

Since I started working out this spring, I noticed I have gained about 5 lbs...not a huge difference, but is this normal?
I do the Gazelle 3-5 times per week and WAS lifting but quit that after I was told I had diabetes.......so I haven't lifeted in about 3 months or so.....

I guess that would depend, maybe you put on 5lbs of muscles. Is your bg's in good control?

My Dr. told me to lift. It turns fat into muscles. I guess the muscles burns sugar off. Where fat doesn't and you would need more insulin. More muscles less insulin would be needed. And every time you use your muscles you would be burning sugar.

Hi Jenny.

Normal. . .I am not sure there is such a thing

It isn't unusual for some people to gain weight when they begin a workout program. Weight really isn't that important. Our weight, is simply a measurement of the force of gravity on our physical mass. If you want to know how your workout program is affecting your body, use a tailors tape measure and take note of how your clothes feel. I recently saw in Prevention that it takes a month of workouts for an individual to begin to notice a difference and it takes about 3 months for others to notice.

Tony,

Fat does not turn into muscle. Fat is stored in fat cells in the body, hopefully for later use as fuel. Muscle tissue is made up of fibers. When we exercise, we can increase the size of muscle fibers and shrink the size of fat cells. By increasing the size of the muscle fibers, we burn more calories, carbohydrates and hopefully fat.

Doesn't muscle weigh more than fat? Maybe that is it you are gaining muscle!
