Exercise

I have a question...and the reason I am asking it here instead of my doctor is because I have gotten mixed answers.....

How much is too much exercise? I can handle a about 15-30 minutes of exercise 3-5 times a week.....

How about everyone else? What is your limit?

Hi Jenny,

I think it depends on what you are doing and how strenuous it is. I don't know that there is any reliable standard that can say any amount is 'too much'. However, some activities require days of recovery. Serious weight training requires a rest day or two between sessions to allow the muscles to recover.

If you are comfortable with your workout schedule, go for it. If you find that you no longer seem to benefit from it, you should change it up some.

As you know the current wisdom is that people should get 30 minutes to an hour of exercise each day. That doesn't have to be a single session. I try to get at least 30 minutes of some activity almost every day. I normally take Sundays as rest days and if I think I need a rest during the week, I will take Wednesday off.

I hope some of this is useful.

Travis

i usually exercise anywhere between 45 minutes to sometimes two hours depending on what im doing... i started off with 30 minutes and worked my way up gradually 30 minutes just doesnt feel like anything to me anymore...

you should definatly do what your body can handle in the begining....start off 15 minutes every 3-4 days and then work your way up to 30 then to 45...45 minutes is usually good to stay at every other day for a long time... even if its just walkingif you do weights or anything you should do it every other day to get the best results....my doctor says you can walk everyday if you want to for 15-30 minutes to keep blood sugars in control...remember exercise is like having another medication...it drops your blood naturally...just make sure that you check your blood sugars before during and after to prevent hypoglycemia

Hi Jenny,

I workout a little different from most. I prefer to call it "playing"...LOL. Someone told me that children stay thin because they play and adults workout. So, I am trying to learn to play like a kid again. (I am 49, but don't tell) I try to either kayak, rollerblade (five miles) or hike every day. Worst case scenerio, I do exercise using a recumbent bike about 30 minutes a day. My doc says anything less than 30 minutes isn't going to be enough. I use a pump, so I usually set a temporary basal rate and eat a bit of high protien before my activity.

Good Luck!!!
