| | | Walking Here's an article on the health benefits of walking. I know many of us are aware of how good walking can be for us. But I thought I'd post this for folks who may be considering what kind of exercise regimen to start. http://channels.netscape.com/new/htm...coop/np/0.html |

| | | Thanks, I know I need to do something. Man Saturday was the 3.5 mile walk for diabetes and I thought my legs where going to fall off. However my 11yo, 9yo and 6yo buzzed through it with no problems.

Currently, I'm doing 1.5 miles twice a day. (Around my neighborhood.) I also get some bonus distance in at work when I have a chance to walk on break or at lunch. |

| | They always say walking is the best type of exercise...one good thing about it, it doesn't put stress on your joints. However, I'm not sure it's the best type for those of us who want to lose weight. For that, I think exercise like running may be more appropriate as it gets your heart rate up and burns calories quicker.

I've seen her a few times this summer/fall and I can see the changes. She says her legs feel much stronger and toned, but the biggest change is the reduction in her waistline, so maybe regular walking is the key for that dangerous-around-the-belly weight. If you want to lose weight a bit faster though, I imagine you'd need something more to get you really going. |

Anyone who starts from a position of usually being sedentary will need to walk first and slowly work up to jogging/running.
Results would also depend on what the overall weight-loss plan is and one's goal. It's a balance between calories and exercise -- and how quickly one wants to lose weight.
Personally, walking has worked well for me and for several friends I used to walk with. But I guess as with anything related to one's body, it may depend on the individual. |

| | | You have to walk before you can run. Especially if you haven't done anything for a long time. Walking is a good start and at 51 with old knees I will probably never run, but I can do 2+ miles on the eliptical (or cross trainer). |

| | | What do you do about pain when you walk? As little as a year ago, I walked from 2 to 4 miles with no problem. Now the pain in my feet and hips leaves me almost crippled for several days, after even a short walk.

| | There is nothing quite like a brisk walk on a beautiful fall day when the hues are deep red, yellow and gold, and there is a crispness in the air.
