Anyone else in the martial arts?

I was diagnosed in Jan 05 and have since lost 40 lbs, down to 175. I have also gone back to my karate training. I was forced to take about three years off due to heart problems. Is there anyone else studying the martial arts and if so anything speacial I should be watching for?

I'm not, but I'm thinking about it. My daughter takes Tae Kwon Do and it looks fun. I'd love to know how it effects your bg's. I get tired just watching the 20-30 min's of stretching and excersizing that they do just to warm up! I've hesitated becuase I think I'm too old (32) to start. Let me know how it effects you....it'll be interesting to see. Have fun!

Do you tend to go low with exercise? My daughter has done karate for 8 years now. Just from watching her I know if Thomas did karate he would definately need to eat before and disconnect his pump.

Too Old???? I am now 46 and am certainly not the oldest in our group. I find it great excercise and any club worth joining will take into concideration any physical limitation you may have. My hips don't work as well as they used to and I am certainly not as flexible as I used to be, so they do not expect me to be able to kck somebody in the chin or do the splits.
As for the excercise I just have to watch it. I am a T2 so as long as I eat a light supper fairly heavy on the protiens I don't have a problem. Mind you I have a box of orange juice in my bag at the side of the gym and all the instructors know I am diabetic. If you do try it make sure you tell the instructors.
I think as long as you are not suffering from nuropathy, especially in the feet, you should be okay. Having said that, any club that emphasises contact sparring I would probably stay away from.
Oh and as always check with your doctor.

I would really like to start but I guess I'm embarassed because I'm a little pudgy and I feel that they'll look at me and laugh and think "there's no way this chick could be serious". I love learning anything! I just taught myself the irish penny whistle, am learning to sail seriously (9meter aloha) so I find the thaugh of learning a martial art very appealling. The excersize aspect looks great too. Plus, my hubby's a peace officer and knows all these holds and things. There's only one I can get out of without killing myself. I'd love to be able to spar and hold my own with him. Right now it just degenerates into a wrestling match that ends with me laughing to pee myself. Wouldn't it be funny if I could surprise him and throw him down..heheh..that would be hilarious! Anyways, let me know how it goes. I may just get brave enough to go to a gym and sign up.

Steve,

I'm T2 and on insulin. I've been working out at the gym and weight lifting. I've started kick boxing and I love it. I have to eat before class, test before in the middle and after. It took me awhile to find the right combination of food to prevent a low and not stay high.


Liz, I'm 45 and it doesn't matter if I am the oldest in the class. You're never too old to try something new. You'd be surprised, I'm in better shape than a lot of the younger people.

I think if you go out and watch a couple of lessons you will quickly find that you are no more out of shape than a lot of the participants. The secret to it is to find a dojo you are comfortable with and instructors you are comfortable with.

I use to take Judo, very fun.. but exhausting. I usually just tested before I started, if i was 110 or under id have something like a clementine, or granola bar. If i was over that (but still in considerable range of being a "good blood sugar) id do nothing. I always kept a gatorade there.
