Hi Everyone:

I guess it had to happen, I woke up this morning feeling a bit achy, throat a bit scratchy, all of the familiar signs of that old rhino-virus taking hold. (No, it isn't H1N1 -- I had that a long time ago.)

As I have often heard BG levels go a bit bonkers and boy have mine every gone ballistic -- 136 FBG I double checked an hour later and it was down to 120 with a post breakfast of 156! I suppose that all will return to "narmal" when the infection works its way out of my system. I just did another test and the BG is down to 140. I hate being sick for lots of reasons and now high BG levels only add to the miserable feeling, largely because I test and know it, otherwise it's just a cold coming on.

No bicycle riding or other forms of exercise for a few days as I simply feel lousy.

Hi you guys

Went to do a GTT on Monday again, with 30 min readings (looks like I'm on drugs:) )!
Phoned my Endo yesterday to get the results, and it was all within the limits. Highest reading that they got was 5.9mmol.

Now I don't know why it is, I am trying hard to eat right, although I do cheat sometimes :D . What is just a bit cofusing is that I took my bg with my meter while I was there as well. My fasting reading was the same as the lab, but my highest was 7.3mmol (which is not that bad), it just seems that there's quite a big difference between my meter and the lab.

It would seem that the bg is starting to be under control. Does this mean that it is totally gone, or is there a chance that it will go back to where it was again?

But I'm going hypo 1-2 hours after eating. For example, the other day: before breakfast was 78, ate two eggs and 2 pc's of toast, 30 min's later felt horrible and BS was 64, so I ate yogurt and BS was back up to 100 within 45 min's. Today I ate the two eggs and toast and again felt horrible 1.5 hours after eating. Just checked my BS and it's 62. I'm trying to figure out why I keep going hypo and if this is something to be concerned about. Thank you for any insight.

Blood work showed a fasting level of 96. However, whenever I consume a fairly high amount of carbs, particular with sugar, maybe 75 to 100 grams per sitting, my level will scoot up. Today I had about 85 grams of carbs for lunch and my one-hour postprandial level was 169. I asked the doctor if I was prediabetic and he said I wasn't BECAUSE my triglycerides were excellent (75) and my A1C was 5.9%. I said to him that I was told if you had no inclination toward diabetes (pre- or otherwise) then you "would never crack 120 no matter what you ate," and he said that was total bunk. He said even people with normal blood sugars will spike if they consume a high level of carbs.

I really trust this doctor but I'm totally confused because of other things that I've read which say that your 1-hour PP should be under 140 and your 2-hour PP should be under 120.

So ... who should I listen to?

So, I went to see my Endo yesterday to get the results of all the blood tests. Thyroid functions that she tested were fine, but she ordered a whole lot of other thyroid functions tests now.

With the tumor marker, she did pick up that there is a tumor somewhere (levels were elevated - trouble is to find it), and she firmly believes that the pre-diabetes is because of that.

I also have a Vitamine D Deficiency as well as high cholesterol and High LDL levels (triglycerides are fine), so my cholesterol is heriditary.

She ordered a number of blood tests now again, and after she gets the results of that, she will do a scan where they inject a dye that will hopefully indicate the whereabouts of the tumor. She also ordered another GTT with 30min readings to check my bg.

I am sitting at the moment with very mixed feelings (very emotional). On the one side I am ecstatic that she at last found out what the cause of all my funny symptoms are, and according to her, if we sort out the tumor, all the other symptoms (pre-diabetes, nausea, dizziness, etc) will disappear. On the other side I am scared to death, because there is always a possiblity that a tumor can be malignant, although she reassured me that most endocrine tumors are benign.

So, hopefully within the next month or 2 all will be sorted. In the meantime I saw a dietitien who helped me with a low carb diet to try and save my beta cells that I have left.

First of all I eat low carb.
1:30 ate food
2:25 BC was 154
3:24 BC was 193
4:28 BC was 117
Thought all was ok.
After 5 I started getting shaky and wasn't feeling right. I felt really stressed.
5:27 BC was 55

Why would it all of a sudden crash like that? I don't take any meds.

This is why I eat low carb. This happens if I eat more than 20 carbs per day. I'm not diabetic because I still seem to be producing insulin right.

I could give other examples with an even lower carb meal. Even if I eat 3 cups of popcorn with sandwich of 6 carbs per sliceof bread it will go up to 180 so it's not just McDonalds.

I eat 20 carbs or less to keep my BC under or at 100.

I'm fine eating low carb and the only reason I'm now taking the BC count is at the urging of hubby.

Hi guys, haven't posted for some time, was a bit busy!

Went to see my Endo for the first time on the 13th of Oct. She reckons the Pre-D that they picked up is secondary diabetes, because I don't have any of the other risk factors at this stage.

She did some blood tests to test for tumors on my adrenal glands as well as some or other gland in the back of my neck of which the name totally escapes me

I'm seeing her again on the 3rd of Nov for the results. She said that I must also do a OGTT in Nov again because the previous one was in June. Thinking about asking her to test for LADA while she's busy, even if it is only to give me peace of mind!

Have any of you had/have secondary diabetes? I've read up on it and apparently it's very rare (only 2% of diabetes is secondary).
