Before the introduction of insulin, a person with acute-onset diabetes had a short life expectancy and died in ketoacidosis. We report the case of our great-grandfather (J. M. Brostoff) and grandfather (J. Brostoff) respectively, who was diagnosed with acute-onset diabetes in 1909, at the age of 29 years. He survived by diet treatment alone, aided by strength of will, for 14 years, and was one of the first patients in the UK to receive insulin in August 1923; the first British-made insulin having been released in July of that year. He lived to the age of 88 years, in robust health, and with no overt signs of microvascular or macrovascular pathology

Hi, I am new to the forums. I found this website as I was looking for info on LADA.

Background: I have a daughter that has Type 1 Diabetes (for many years) and I was just diagnosed with "Type 2" and put on Metformin. I do not have anyone in our family with Type 2, but do have a paternal uncle who had Type 1 (and of course my daughter). About 5 years ago my family participated in a Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) study of "autoimmunity" during our visits to Childrens Hospital. My results were positive for both GAD65 and IA2 markers. Does this mean I actually have Type 1.5 or could I still have Type 2?

Thank you to any responses - and I will keep researching.

What is interesting is for the next week straight my BG levels were higher than I have ever seen them! My Endo doesn't seem to think one had anything to do with the other, but there is nothing I did that week that would have made that much of a difference. After that first week, they went back to normal and have been fine ever since.

Has anyone else experienced this when getting the H1N1 Shot ?

I last had a C-peptide in May. Isn't it arguably time for another, the end of this month when I see my Endo?

How often does your Endo check C-peptide on you, with LADA or adult-onset Type 1? Or is only per your blood sugars that they decide to check again .... ?

Okay this link is to a comment on this guy's article, but apparently this Gale guy is a sort of Luddite detractor to several modern Diabetes theories. In 2005, he published an editorial, "Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults: A Guide For the Perplexed," calling LADA (T 1.5) and GAD antibody testing as much as "hogwash." It generated some rebuttals, of course. It is a sort of interesting read, particularly if you have GAD antibodies. He claims people over 45 often have GAD antibodies without Diabetes, and that they are not sensitive or specific enough to be worth measuring. He speaks in terms of patients being either "positive" or "negative," only. Not relative titers, etc.

Interestingly several articles since his have argued for dose-response, and for multiple antibody testing.

It explains where my Endo is coming from (SIGH!), and now I truly suspect she is entrenched ... not a good prognosis.

Thought I would share ... :D

Hey gang,
I guess I'll ask this question here to as there are probably more insulin users here.

I'm just on Day 19 of using Lantus and for the last 3 days I've noticed less control than earlier in the Pen's reservoir. I really haven't changed my diet at all in the last 3 days and I've even gone up another unit in that time. Has anyone ever experienced that near the end of the Pen's reservoir the 'strength' of the basal insulin gets weaker? It's also 17 days or so from the start of this Pen. They say it's good for a month. This would be only about halfway thru a month..And my last 3 doses have been just under the 50 units left mark.

But I'm worried that at the bottom of this pen -- I'm not getting 'potent' enough a dose. Am I crazy?

Is there a perfect way to store your pen like on its side rather than on its end, top or bottom, that could prevent potency or mixture issues if that's even a potential?

Thanks in advance for any input!

Hi there,

I have been newly diagnosed as a diabetic although, my 3 month average heamoglobin sugar gave an average of 9.11 mmol.

The doctors do not quite know which type I am especially as my mother has type 2 and older sister, type 1. I am 22 years old and not overweight. I have been prescribed metformin 500mg three times a day but instead I have been taking "Jambu" in the powder form. Its a fruit originating from bangladesh which has insulin like properties. its controling my blood sugar much better than metformin.

I am curious to know how common type 1.5 is and what biological difference it has to the other two. It might be beneficial to know how a type 1.5 got diagnosed.

Thanks in advance....
:)

its 17 weeks since i started to eat a diet that is mostly raw and mostly alkalizing in nature.

some of you may recall i posted about my success at the 6 week stage. by week 5 i had been able to stop taking external insulin completely, after constantly monitoring my blood sugars throughout.

at week 15 i had bloods drawn up as part of my bi-annual checkup with my family doctor. he was amazed when i told him about my new healthy regimen.

the blood results came back
HbA1c 5.2% (down from a steady 5.6 to 5.8 over the last 2 years)
Cholesterol 3.8 (down from a steady 4.1 to 4.4 over last 2 years)
kidneys, liver and thyroid are functioning normally
fasting blood sugars are consistently around the 5mmols regions
and i still require no insulin or prescribed meds at all.

what i have added to my regimen is some supplements that support the pancreas.

Chromium Picolinate
Alpha Lipoic Acid
and
vitamin D3

along with the bicarbonate of soda which helps to alkalize the body as well.

my doctor dictated a letter to the diabetologist telling him it was 'nothing short of a miracle!' :D

amazing huh??

my body weight has reduced by almost a stone (although that wasnt my initial goal!) i now weigh a healthy 9st8lbs.

oh! and during my recent eye checks there are no signs of diabetes there either.

i'm having a good week!
