We picked up some 8th Continent Soy Milk Complete Vanilla flavor to give it a try.  Kind of tastes like melted vanilla ice cream but now we mix 1 part 2% milk to 2 parts Soy milk for our Capps and it is DELICIOUS!  There's just enough creaminess from the milk to keep the consistancy right and the Soy milk actually froths pretty well.  The affect on my BG is much less so it's a win win.</div>

I notice that in every store the low-carb food is never in the food aisles, and this is true in grocery stores as well. Also, out of curiosity, I bought one of these bars. I regret this decision. <br />

My question is twofold - Why are these &quot;foods&quot; never in food aisles, and since there is nothing in these &quot;foods&quot; that would be edible on its own, why do we consider it to be a food?</div>

I am a pasta lover and am wondering if this business about low GI expensive pastas is as good as it sounds, and if trying to learn about the whole glycemic index business is worthwhile.<br />
<br />
I am two weeks into my diagnosis and missing heaping bowls of macaroni, huge baked potatoes, large hunks of Italian bread and butter dunked into nice big cups of sugar sweetened coffee. Fake sugar, 2 ounce portions of macaroni, and the like are not much to look forward to.</div>

So I counted only 15 g carbs, INCLUDING the maltitol -- (I always count it in) -- for a beta-cell-shattering reading of 159 at one hour ... up from only 93 os a 66-point rise.  <br />
<br />
Okay I am not gonna die immediately from that, but it is nothing I would do on a regular basis.<br />
<br />
Next, a couple days later I skipped lunch so I could measure the effects of an Atkins Advantage bar, also maltitol ... 11 g carbs, again counting the maltitol ... not quite so bad, 140, a 33-point rise over starting BG.  I will eat one again ... as a meal.  And infrequently!<br />
<br />
Clearly, my tolerance for maltitol is no prize ... <br />
<br />
And, my Endo thinks I should be able to eat 40 g of carb per meal (no mention of glycemic index out of her, either) ... PAH!</div>

Hi, Pravin, since November is National Diabetes Month, I thought this would be a good question to answer. <br />
<br />
Fruits are a good source of vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants and phytonutrients, all of which are important for diabetics. Fruits, however, do have more carbohydrates than vegetables, 15 grams per serving, so they should be considered like a starch if you are counting carbohydrates. <br />
<br />
If you are eating canned fruit, make sure that it does not have added sugar, and if you are drinking juice or eating dried fruit, it is very important to watch serving sizes closely. <br />
<br />
One serving of fruit juice is 4 ounces or about ½ cup, which is far less than most people drink at one time. In addition, fruit juice has limited to no fiber, which makes it a somewhat less healthy option. <br />
<br />
Dried fruit is particularly carbohydrate-dense since the water has been removed, so serving sizes are very small (2 tablespoons of dried fruit = 1 fruit serving), which is often much less satisfying and makes it much more challenging to control portion sizes. <br />
<br />
If you choose foods based on the glycemic index -- how much a specific quantity of food raises blood sugar -- you may be aware that some fruits like melon, pineapple and dried fruit have a higher glycemic index. If you enjoy these fruits, I recommend combining them with a little lean protein like low-fat cottage cheese or healthy fats like nuts to help keep blood sugar stable. <br />

If on a low carb diet, and you exercise moderately, what is burned (used) by the body as the primary fuel (the most)?  Fat or Muscle (protein)?  Seems that there is NO consensus anywhere in the world.  Some say that low carb causes Muscle loss first.  But if that's the case, how the heck can you have lots of ketones in your urine?  I get that low carb first uses up stored glucose, and each pound of glucose has 3-4 pounds of water associated with it.  But once that stored amount is used up, if you still retain ketones, you MUST be losing fat (assuming that there is a mix between the dietary and body fat being used).<br />
<br />
Of course, then you get people who say that low-carb (by proxy, high protein) diets cause kidney failure.  On the other hand, if you already have the big D, your body and kidneys are being killed by the high levels of blood glucose (from carbs) anyways, so for a diabetic, perhaps high protein kidney killing is the lesser of two evils.  You don't read THAT much in the news about all these people dying of kidney failure from protein intake, so perhaps that's just anti-low carb fanatics using scare tactics.<br />
<br />
DeusXM had posted some time ago a summary of what is burned first (or in primary order): Alcohol -&gt; Glucose -&gt; Simple carbs-&gt; Complex carbs -&gt; Fat -&gt; Proteins.<br />
<br />
This makes sense, especially when looking at how our ancestors would have had much lower carb diets naturally.  If Proteins were used up before fats, then in extreme cases, a person would wind up as a fat blob lying on the ground, completely unable to move to get themselves more food.  This makes no evolutionary sense, yet I've come across hundreds of body builder articles that say, &quot;if you low carb it, then you will lose protein/muscle first because the body goes into starvation mode and stores all fat for last&quot;.<br />
<br />
At the end of the day, I want to be healthier, to see my girls get married, and live a long happy life with my wife.  I want to lose weight.  In my low carbing since February, I have lost 15lbs.  Not nearly enough, but I suppose it's a start.  But the more I read, the more I fear I'm just switching one evil for another.  I either stay fat and kill my kidneys and body with carbs, or I lose some weight, taking lots of my spare time in exercise and not with family, only to kill my kidneys and body by low carbing and increasing my protein intake.  WTF?<br />

Any help, suggestions, good quality reliable links are all appreciated.</div>

The Metformin is starting to kick in and my BG is dropping which is great but my weight is starting to go in the other direction now! Doh!<br />
I've been trying to stay extremely low carb.  I've been eating fairly lean meats and veg and have eggs and turkey bacon for breakfast but I think the real culprit for me is the nuts (almonds, pistachios, walnuts) I've been using as my snacks.  Anyone who can be satisfied with the recommended 1 oz serving of roasted Almonds has way better will power than me.<br />
I've been reading the snack thread and am hoping to come up with some other low carb alternatives that are lower in fat.<br />
I just bought three pair of new pants and don't want to go back. :T <br />
Gym membership is the next step.</div>

I'm not saying it's OK to pig out on an entire box, only to be aware of/set your limits and always exercise caution - test often. <br />
It might be easier for me to do this because I need to ration my supply, most items are not available in stores here.<br />
