Worried because I care

Hello um.. I'm new here and whilst I don't have diabetes I thought that I should still join.

I recently moved to University at the end of September and my after getting to know my new flatmates I found out one of them has diabetes, now i'm not saying thats a BAD thing but I often get worried about her.

She had an eye problem on the first week that we were here and it cleared up. But now it's came back and gotten worse, because of this she needs to go see an emergency eye doctor tommorrow morning. I've offered to go with her (as you do) but I feel really bad that I can't do anything more to console her. Ive checked up alot of websites and articles to do with Eye problems, but sadly I don't think it's right to make assumptions. Is there anything i could say or do to help her feel better?

Thanks
xxx

As a general rule, what helps is very rarely what you say, but instead, simply being there for that person. Help them when they need a hand, give them a shoulder to cry on if they need it, and always remind them that you're their friend.

All of that is far more important than saying the right thing (and too often, when you try to say the right thing, you end up saying the wrong one)

Be there. She'll likely get some rather intense laser. It's not that painful, but it is very hard work. Surgery is also a possibility. The technology is very good and you can tell her that many of us have experienced this and come through it very well.

Your biggest role could be helping her regain or maintain control of her sugar levels. She needs to have an A1C below 6%. It's doable by everyone with the right information. Lots of temptations at school. Help her stay the course, but don't be a food nazi. It's a tough role. Information is power.

You are not immune. You and or someone you love will surely be touched too at some time. Your experiences can help others too down the road.

Good luck!
