I am not a nurse, but work for an ophthalmologist as a tech. Cataract surgery has become a simple operation for both patient and surgeon. Performed in an out-patient ambulatory surgical site. Actual surgical procedure time is about 9 minutes. Usually there is 1-2 weeks between eyes if you are having both done. Sometimes this is more of an insurance time issue than the surgeons choice. Recovery is minimal and exercise with weights, swimming and yes golf can usually be resumed within 1-2 weeks. We use an IV so that sedatives can be delivered. The implant (IOL) is not something you can "feel" in your eye and the power of the lens is calculated for distance or near vision. Most Dr's set the power for distance as wearing reading glasses is presumed to be easier for the patient. Should you, the patient, select the new multi-focal lens (IOL) there is an extra cost. Private insurance and Medicare will pay for the standard IOL implant. But the new multi-focal IOL will cost you out of pocket and the $5000 quoted in an earlier response is current market price that I have seen. Our patients are advised to work with their endo concerning the NPO (no eating or drinking) after midnight prior to the surgery. We ask that they use their regular meds with a small sip of water the morning of surgery. This is prob more than you wanted to know, got in work mode here.....

Hope this helped.
