Usually once a year is sufficient unless you develop retinopathy or another diabetes related problem. These problems are probably not likely to develop unless you've been diabetic for a long time or have had problems with control. I've had background retinopathy for about 18 yrs. now, but it has remained stable and has never affected my vision. For a couple of years I had to go every 8 months, but when I went last Septemer my ophthalmologist couldn't see any active signs of the disease process, so he said not to come back for a year. At any rate, I've been Type 1 for 34 years and still have 20/20 distance vision and only wear glasses for reading. I hope this is encouraging for anyone who's newly diagnosed and concerned about complications.

My endo claims that most eye problems don't start showing up until around the 10th year, but he referred me to an opthalmologist in my 4th year. Lucky for me, no problems yet. I don't even need corrective eyewear yet and I look at a lot of numbers and fine print everyday!

I go to my ophthalmologist every 6 month. And all diabetics in Russia do so.
