| Usually once a year is sufficient unless you develop retinopathy or another diabetes related problem. These problems are probably not likely to develop unless you've been diabetic for a long time or have had problems with control. I've had background retinopathy for about 18 yrs. now, but it has remained stable and has never affected my vision. For a couple of years I had to go every 8 months, but when I went last Septemer my ophthalmologist couldn't see any active signs of the disease process, so he said not to come back for a year. At any rate, I've been Type 1 for 34 years and still have 20/20 distance vision and only wear glasses for reading. I hope this is encouraging for anyone who's newly diagnosed and concerned about complications. |
