gestational diabetes

hi, kind of confused. i had GD with my 1st one and controlled it with diet and exercise. in the last few weeks highest was 140-160 1hr after meal and it was rare. like 3-4 times in a week where in i would be testing 5 times a day. my baby weighed only 6lb13oz.
i am 13 weeks preg now and my doc asked be to monitor from the start. my new meter (ultra 2) gave reading like 143 and 140 when one touch older model gives reading like 114 and 118 with in 5 mins of chking. is my ultra 2 giving errors???
Another day when i checked my reading twice in one touch ultra 2 i got 140 and 130 ( 10mins later). Can blood sugar fall quickly in 10 mins??

I am worried coz there are days when my bg has been 80-90 after a meal?? I never had any fluctuations in my previous pregancy. In my previous pregancy I can give an account of my high sugar based on portion control, high carb or just having a small dessert........). This time I am having surprises quite early in pregnancy. Do u think I have GD now itself? My H1ac was within normal range?

Meters only have to be accurate to within 20% so 114/118 & 140/143 aren't necessarily that far different. Same for the 140 dropping to 130 - YES, blood sugar can definitely drop that fast...however because of the 20% variance, you can test the same drop of blood with the same meter & get readings that far apart.

That's actually good...your blood sugar should be in that range, ideally. Also, remember you're checking earlier in the pregnancy this time, so your hormones are doing things differently right now than they were when you were pregnant & checking your blood sugar last time.

If you have had one GD pregnancy, you probably are this time too...Your A1C test covers over the last 3 months so that includes the time when you just got pregnant (possibly even slightly before you were pregnant) so your blood sugar may not have been acting up yet for part of that time.

Congrats on the pregnancy!

thanks genie.

the OB/dietician wanted fasting to be 70-90, 1hr after every major meal 100-130.
those 20 % variance in meters, would put me in uncontrolled high bg in one and on the other hand 114/118 in another is well within the recommended range. what to trust???
sorry for what being clear- 80-90 1 hr after a meal isn't it equal to my fasting range ? does it mean i am having low sugar?
thx

It's lower than what your doctor specified, but it's not low (69 or below is considered "low.") However...your doctor is probably giving you a safety net so you don't go too low. I'd discuss it with him/her, but I wouldn't be overly concerned about it until you can.
