New here :)

Hi,
Was diagnosed with Type 2 back in May of 2005, however, have lost 40 pounds which melted off.

Currently having trouble maintaining weight (139 pounds, 6'1" tall) and battling battering exhaustion, so have gone back to new doc, who says I may be Type 1, but will wait for the blood tests to come back to me.

Living in Texas as I immigrated to the USA in January, I am an Englishman of 52 years of age, married to a Texas woman

I'm looking at some of the threads, and I must confess I could use a diabetic "dictionary" to decode some of the terms. Was working on controlling the diabetes with diet and exercise alone, but that's no longer working for me.

So, tell me - what in the heck is "post-prandial" just for starters?

Thanks
Brit

Hi Brit and welcome. I will let some of our more knowledgeable members answer your questions. Sounds to me like you are a bit underweight. My husband is thin and he is almost 6' and weighs 168. I think we all deal with exhaustion some of the time, it is part of the disease.

Welcome. That's an easy one - no science to explain, no controversy, and no "ifs, ands, and buts."
Post-prandial just means after meals, specifically that time that the meal has an effect on your metabolism.

Welome - that's funny, I have to ask what people from England are saying. I have a friend from England that translates for me.

It is one of my pet opinions that nobody else seems to share that type 2's that control by diet and exercise and cannot get their fasting numbers down to the mid 80's or no more than the high 90's all the time are doing themselves, slowly at that. Beta cell burnout is a big problem for type 2's - when your body tries to bring you down to where it would control a non-diabetic all the time you get some beta cell burnout. You seem to be doing very well but are slowly losing the beta cells you need. Like I said, just my opinion.

Keep us up on what the new doctor says.

Hello and welcome to this wondeful place!

Been living in England for almost 8 years... I am forever confused with both American and British words. I often add to this my own French Canadian influenced concoctions.

Hello Brit, it's Nice To Meet You. Ya, you have lost alot. Usually
Type 2's are Happy to lose weight. Perhaps indeed you are a Type 1.
You sure won't be the first 52 yr. old to be dxd. as Type 1. Back when
I was dxd., Type 1(Juvenile Onset)usually went to ages 18-19, then to
20-25 tops. Things sure have changed. Feel free to ask about anything
you need to know especially shortforms and Diabetes Lingo. Everyone's
Happy to help you.

Welcome aboard.

BTW, post-prandial (sp?) means, post meal or after eating...

Welcome,
As Kickstart says if you are type 1 you won't be the first to be diagnosed at 52. I was 52 when diagnosed 18 months ago following a large weight loss. I too was exhausted but now feel full of energy(most of the time!).
Whatever the reason, I hope your doctor helps you to work out whats causing the problem.
Helen
