I am new to this forum and am looking forward to reading and learning so much.

I have had blood sugar issues as long as I can remember. As a teenager I had these "attacks" where I started shaking, trembling, sweating while I got weaker and weaker until I finally found some candy. I learned to keep food in my purse. As a young adult, the attacks became so bad I finally went to a doctor. I guess because I am so thin, he just nodded and wrote a prescription. I got it filled and found out it was a tranquilizer! I just kept eating the candy and kept my mouth shut after that.

During my second pregnancy, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, and came to realize I had developed it in my first pregnancy in the last 2 months (hence sugar in my urine during each of those doctor visits). My second child was over 9 pounds. After the pregnancy the sugar "attacks" raged and I lost 9 pounds while I was pigging out on Big Macs and Krispy Kremes. So I got sent to an endo for the first time. Some of my 5 hour scores were positive for pre-diabetes and some weren't, so he diagnosed me as hypoglycemic since I had an incredible drop after 2 hours (at last I knew why I was hungry every 2 hours!)

Fast forward 14 years, and I went to the hospital for a procedure on my bladder. I casually mention that they may want to check my sugars since I am hypoglycemic and had been fasting for 12 hours. I was glad they checked before putting me under anesthesia because I was at 36. They gave me sugar water in my IV for 10 minutes and I went straight up to 260. I was told I was "out of control". I went to the endo the next day. Everything he got was consistent with pre-diabetes and I am on Metformin.

Sorry for the long story....all that to say it has been a crazy ride and I am looking forward to the support here!

I'm sorry you are going thru all this trouble. I'm actually surprised they did not check you more thru out your pregnancy. Its a bit confusing to have positive test results and have ur blood sugar swing so much. All these symptoms are a bit confusing, are u under a physicians care now?

Hello and welcome to this wonderful place Judy!

I was hypoglycemic too as a teenager. Had gestational diabetes for all my pregnancies and my smallest baby was 8.5 lbs and the biggest 11 lbs.

I hope you get all the blood work done, etc. Find a good doc, make sure you have the best follow up possible. I was pretty much left to my own devices back when I was diagnosed. I didn't suffer any complications (thank goodness!) but you have a life to live, you should live it to the fullest... so you need an excellent health care team. You deserve it!

It sounds like a crazy ride, Judy. Hope you are able to get it under control and enjoy knowing how to keep care of yourself.

Enjoy the forum. It has been a great help to me. You'll find that there is someone here that can answer anything you ask. Ask away. You'll also find that whatever you ask, is needed by someone else. I, too, had gestational diabetes. It just never went away. So here I am with Type 2.

Thanks for the welcome.

Fortunately, with gestational diabetes, they are so concerned for your health and the babies', that I was required to attend a half day training regimen at the local hospital. There I learned all about self-monitoring and how to follow a diet plan, had a consult with a dietition and on and on. I found out later that I knew more about blood sugars, food and metabolism than most of the diabetics I ran across.

This time out they have pretty much prescibed the medication and left me on my own. But at this point having had gestational diabetes I feel like I know what I am doing...but there is always room for improvement. Thanks so much for the concern!
