Hi all,

I was diagnose with type 2 diabetes only a month ago. It really felt if my world had came to a standstill. I still struggle the fact that I have diabetes. Luckily with the support of friends and forums like this, it make it easier to accept. I did have read everything I could have lay may hands / eyes on. Unfortunately, in South Africa, diabetes don't get the moral support and advise, as people elsewhere in the world.

I have to buy me a glucometer, but, I don't have the slightest idea which one. My doctor did mention the Medisense optium, but I could not find it at any pharmacy in Cape Town. Can any of you guys suggest one that it cost effective. I believe the meter isn't the problem, but the strips that you use is quite expensive.

Yes, indeed. It's the cost of strips that will kill you if you have little or
no coverage. Ypou should hae some coverage being a Police Officer. I
could send you a free meter kit from here if you want. But I think someone
here said the reli-on(I think)meter and strips are the cheapest from Wal-marts,
if there is one there? I think someone said it costs about $10.00 for
the meter. The strips are cheaper though.

I think there are a couple here from South Africa and I'm guessing one is
Bird's Eye. Pardon if I'm wrong.

Well, with Type 2 you are still able to secure your job right? You do have a
challenge ahead of you with Diabetes but wth exercise and diet, weight
loss(if needed)that can work for many yrs. Some need oral meds. to help out.
Keep a goood attitude 'cuz you have a long interesting Life ahead of you.

Hi Kickstart101,

I really appreciate your help, but I think I will have a difficult time to find the compatablie stips in SA.

About a year ago, I became a "profiler" so to said in the Intelligence unit. I love it to be desk and office bound. The work is very exciting, and it is more that worthwhile when one of my "suspects" get themselves in jail. I cannot describe the joy.

Like I said, I have read everything I could get. Luckily, I found a dietrician, that help a lot. I start to follow the low GI eating plan, which isn't really new to me, but I do enjoy every meal so far, planned according to one of the recipe books, I bought.

I think although I may be quiet sometimes, I will defintely read all the post. That is what I usually do. I am a very curious person. Always want to learn and find out more.
