| | | Hello Group! Newbie type 2 Hello Group! This site seems like a great resource with a lot of nice people that share constructive info. I look forward to learning a lot and also contributing to the site.
My background: I just found out 2 weeks ago that I have type 2 diabetes. A few weeks before that I had some numbness in my fingers for several mornings when I woke up. I thought it was due to the new bed we just had just got and the way I was sleeping. By mid-afternoon the numbness was always gone. That only happed for about 5 or 6 days. About a week after that my vision drastically improved—I had a “-4” prescription in both eyes for about 2 years, and in less than 30 hours I had almost 20/20 vision. Even though the improved vision was great I was very concerned. I went to my ophthalmologist and she thought it might be related to my “blood-sugar” levels and advised I get some blood work done. My family doctor reviewed the results with me and said I had type 2 diabetes. My vision stayed at almost 20/20 for about 3 days. Then over a week it slowly went back to about -4.
Over the lest two weeks I have been doing a lot of research and also got two good books that talk about diets based on low-glycemic loads.” It was very interesting to understand the relationship and differences between glycemic index and glycemic load. The book that has benefited me the most is “The Holford Low GL Diet”. I am also very lucky my wife has been very supportive about the changes in our diets to help me try to control this without meds. I have seen good results so far just with the change in my diet and daily exercise. I have a follow up with my doctor in 3 weeks, I am hoping it will not be assessed at that time that I need meds, that my diet and exercise will work.
My wife and I are finding the Low-GL diet very manageable; we been on and off many diets, this one is fairly easy and we are never hungry. If any of you have questions about the aforementioned book please feel free to ask me. I have only been following the book for two weeks but my glucose levels are consistently improving and my wife and I are loosing weight without being hungry. |

As bad as type 2 can be the good side is the good health side effect when treated properly and aggresively. Exercise is very important to us type 2's. Diet and exercise are a major part of the treatment - in some cases it is the treatment. When it comes time, if it becomes time, for meds don't fight them - when you need them you need them. It is not failure or a set back to need drugs to help control a progressive disease, it is just the way it works out fo some of us. Early diagnosis surely is in our favor, though we usually don't get diagnosed early. |
