Hello! New to Forum

My story goes like this:

I was diagnosed as a Type I when I was 11. My father saw the symptoms (although didn't know of diabetes at that point). Testing with the doctor confirmed diabetes. My father had to come to school one day and pull me out to take me to the hospital where they were waiting for me in the ICU. They were apparently suprised that I came in under my own power.

I did well through middle and high school. Then came college....

I spent most of my 5 years in college (850 miles from home) never having seen a doctor and did rather few blood sugar checks. My family doctor back home would always be willing to call in refills for me. Surprisingly, it seems to not have harmed much (at least not that we have found yet).

Anywho, after school I put off finding an endocronologist (for almost a year) until I woke up one night with a room full of firefighters, paramedics, and an IV in my arm. I dropped so low I went into convulsions. First Time that ever happened. My problem was always running too high. So needless to say that scare got me to an endo. I saw him all of twice and moved to another state chasing a job.

So now I have found a new endo. I started going to them every few weeks. I would see the endo, and then I would see his Nurse Practitioner (who has really done most of the work). I finally got under enough control that I see the endo every 3 months now and his nurse in between. I started on the Novolog 70/30 mix pens and they changed me to Novolog and Lantus. I went to two meetings with a nutritionist to learn carb counting so I could switch from a fixed dose of novolog to a sliding scale.

Since I found this last endo, my A1C went from 11.3 to 9.1 to 8.6. Still a bit left to go, but finally getting there.

I just filed my paperwork with Minimed 2 weeks ago and should be finalizing everything hopefully today (20 July) or tomorrow.

I spent a week or so researching the pumps and debating if I really wanted to go that route (I know everyone seems to love them, but I have somewhat resisted for a while). I have been waiting on Minimed for the last 2 weeks. Just waiting on the final word!

God you sound like me! I'm just finishing my first month of pumping. So far the results are amazing. Got a few highs now and then, but 90%+ are on target. It's definately a life change haveing a tube attached to you 24-7, but I seriously wish I had done it at your age.

Welcome, and stick around and tell us how it goes!
