Question New to the world of diabetes

Last monday I got the message from the doctor, diabetes 2, he also told me to loose 10 kg's, im 183 cm, and 96 kg's. Well, the problem was not that, but the idea of not having some sweets....and change my diet. I feel that the only thing I can eat is sallad. Now, after nearly the first week with diabetes 2,im getting used to the idea. But there is so many things out there, and so many questions. Some doctors say that I can get rid of it, and some say I can't. That is if I keep my diet and keep myself "slim".

You have my empathy. I felt the same way just a few weeks ago about food. I still have have lots to learn and some concerns about what life will be like in 20-30 years from now.

The first week I did a lot of research on the net and then Amazon.com and got two excellent books on low GL diets. After I finished both of the books my wife and I removed all the bad foods from the house and she went shopping (I HATE grocery shopping!!). My wife (awesome woman and wife) is not diabetic but is following the same lifestyle changes with me for support and also improve her health.

There are a lot of things you can eat. Take the time to educate yourself on what foods are good and what foods you should only have every now and then, or consult a professional. Once you commit to eating healthy you will find yourself finding creative ways to cook things you would not have eaten before--and enjoying the stuff. If you limit yourself to salads or just a few meal combinations then before you now it you will be sick of those things and back to eating like you had been in the past.

Hey, welcome to the forum!

I know it's a lot of info to digest when you get that diagnosis, on top of it being difficult to deal with. Salad is not the only thing you have to eat. To lose weight, low carb high protein may be the way to go ( and can be good for your blood sugars too ). You can try to eat leaner meats like grilled chicken. But just making healthier choices in general should help. If you do consume carbs, use whole wheat. I think it's yummier anyway! For snacks I munch on pistachios, a small wedge of cheese, some celery with peanut butter.

Could you inquire about Byetta to your doctor? One of its side effects is weight loss and it curbs your appetite fantastically, which makes it easier to diet. It's a fairly new drug approved for type 2 diabetes.

I wish you the best of luck and please know we're all here to support you!

Hello!

I've only been diagnosed type 2, 3 days ago! But I wanted to say welcome, because this place has been so amazingly supportive to me!

Welcome

There is a learning curve here. At first you have to learn just the vocabulary, that is confusing enough.

There are lots of things to eat - you just have to change the way you buy things. Learn what the labels are really saying. It takes a while to learn all this. For now it is best to just cut back on everything. You will find quantity is not what you need. You need the correct kinds of foods and that does not mean lots of those either. There are no freebies here. Learn about how carbs are listed on labels and how many your body can handle.

A change in lifestyle that includes exercise will do as much as anything for you. Yes, you possibly can turn this around with diet and exercise - everybody says that and some do it. Be aggressive with whatever you do here.
