I am in this forum to try to help and understand my son pre-diabetes change in moods, we are new to all these , he was diagnose 3 months ago , we are doing really good with the foods and counting carbs and sugar free stuff, but does his mood changes can also affect his sugar? i am confused i dont know what to do , maybe some of you guys can help me. Brandon is only 11 years old and is not getting insuline i am trying to control it without it, we been doing really good but the past few days his sugar went high and i think maybe because he's mood, help me please!!! |

Yes his moods can affect his bg's, and his bg's will certainly affect his moods. You probably will not be able to tell which one is causing the other. At 11, if he is not already he will soon be starting puberty. With those hormone cahnges you can expect his moods and bg's to be all over the place.
As for not treating him with insulin, why is he an insulin resistant type 2? Even type 2's with consistant bg's over 300 would do better with insulin. You did not mention any oral meds, is he on any? |

| | | My mood gets really bad when my blood sugar is high. Is it possible his mood changes because of his blood sugar rather than his blood sugar changing because of his mood?

| | | The brain is the largest consumer of glucose in the body. Having too high or too low of a bg can have a noticeable effect as in mood swings, etc... |

Too many things cause a Diabetics sugar
to rise unfortunately. Stress for example, causes most Diabetics sugar
levels to rise while with some of us(me included), stress causes sugar
levels to plummet. He could be crying because he's scared or maybe
is teased about the "moods" his highs and lows cause.
I've not heard of the herb Yacon( nor have I looked it up, but I will).
Could he be having a side effect from the herb? Is he in any pain maybe
from an illness like Urinary Tract Infection(UTI)?
When I was young I used to get severe pains in my calves that made me
cry. It wasn't cramps just pure pain. My Dr. said it was from high sugars.
Never had them as an Adult though when I was high.
Good Luck in finding out what the specific reason is.

| | I am a little confused here . I know that even children are being dxed with t2 diabetes, but I guess what I'm wondering is why you wouldn't be controlling it with his insulin, if that's what the doctor prescribes and recommends? It's apparent that that's what his body needs at this time... Perhaps, as he continues good eating habits and exercise, he'll be able to move off of it. But for now, it sounds like insulin is in order.
I would suggest speaking to your doctor about what is going on. Yes, I'm sure emotions and stress could cause sugar levels to be elevated, but more likely, his body just isn't using the insulin he makes correctly and he needs to supplement with injections.

I just read that the doctor didn't prescribe insulin for Brandon or any medication... Can I ask what type of doctor you went to? If you haven't seen a specialist, I would make an appt. Ultimately, the longer is sugars stay uncontrolled, the more damage is being done.
Hope you find some answers...
