| | | Hello, All. This is my first post on my FIRST Message Board Site I just wanted to drop a line to thank you all for such great posts. I'm in the final stages of getting my MiniMed Pump and I'm very excited about it. I've been a Type 1 diabetic since I was 17 years old.
For the past three weeks I've been diligently counting my carbs in preparation for the new regimen. Taking 4 shots per day for nearly 18 years, I got pretty used to figuring out how different foods affected my blood sugars, but they were always based on guesstimates. Counting the carbs is going to help me loose a LOT of weight - not that I'm heavy, but I wouldn't mind getting back to peak condition. My one question in regard to counting is how do you do it when you go to an all-you-can-eat buffet (I love Vegas AND cruising) where you're not quite sure how something is prepared or a party with hors d'ouvres that you have no idea how to count. Does anyone have a successful system for that? If so, I'd love to hear it.
I expect to have my pump within a week and should be done with the saline trial period in less than two. My first big test will come mid-November when I take my first cruise with the pump. I wish I had more time to get everything set, but that's just how things played out. If MimiMed delays things (which, from the sounds of many of these posts, is quite possible), then I may just wait until I get back from the Caribbean to start things up.
Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself to the Boards. I look forward to learning quite a bit from all of you over the next few months/years.

| | | Howdy. I am sure you will find a lot of support and information here and it sounds like you have a lot of experience to share with the Forums. Nice to see you.
When I go to buffets, I revert to guessing prior to eating and adjusting after as you probably have been doing until now. You have 18 years of guessing behind you, so you must be pretty skilled at guessing how much insulin you need to cover certain foods and I imagine you will be quite successful on your next cruise.
