I've read a report on this forum where a doctor prescribed diabetic medicine to a person who was obviously only in the very early stages of pre-diabetes. Most doctors are just too gung-ho with their prescriptions and don't have the time (or knowledge in many cases) to help people control their conditions with lifestyle changes. |

It was the success rate of the reversal of insulin resistance in this group which prompted them to recommend classifying Prediabetes, and giving prediabetics oral medication. You may call them gung ho, but the ones that have had their insulin resistance reversed say Thank You! |

| Yes and that is precisely what I have been advocating all along. You get diagnosed by a professional and then all the other questions you'll have about lifestyle and managing your treatment, you use us AND your healthcare team.
Otherwise you're suggesting that I implied no-one should ever use this forum, which is a total and utter misrepresentation of my position.
All that I am saying is that if you come here asking 'Do I have diabetes', no-one here can answer that question accurately. Give me a list of symptoms and I and no-one else here will be able to tell you whether or not your have diabetes - we can suggest it's possible but without being able to run tests on you, we can't tell you. Come here and tell me you're having problems with high blood sugars in the morning and we'll be able to suggest lots of different ways of solving that.
Do you see what I'm getting at here? |

I went from high Type 2 BG readings back to pre-diabetic readings in about 3 months. I stopped taking medicine after 6 weeks. Did the medicine cure me?
Are you advocating that pre-diabetics should all start taking medicine because it's been shown to cure pre-diabetes in a group. It would be an easy way for sure. I'd like to see this research. |

| | | I have to agree totally that we should see a doctor if we think we have diabetes.
My family has a history of diabetes. I lost one brother, in his 30's to diabetes. Now, another brother, around 60 is being treated for diabetes.
My doctor has been hounding me because I'm apparently in danger of being Type 2 diabetic. I've had some physicals and test recently to keep track of my situation.
My doctor says I've apparently improved because I've lost 6 pounds in 6 months (I weigh 326 pounds), and glucose serum level has gone down from 120 in August 2006 to 98 this month.
I'm still confused because I think I've experienced some of the more worrisome symptoms, and he might not understand that.
I've resolved to get out more and walk in order to lose weight. And I'm more convinced than ever to reduce my sugar intake.
At any rate, I think this forum will be good for me, as it has been for others. |

When you say reduce your sugar intake what do you mean?
I am hoping you mean that you will reduce your carbohydrate intake. Sugar is just one form of carbohydrate.
If i have learned nothing else it is this: any carbohydrate = sugar!!!

| | | Guys, Gals, Friends.. Who are we kidding?
If there is the least suspicion if you have diabetes, First thing to do is to confirm your doubt. Forewarned is Forearmed.. specially in the case of Diabetes! Earlier you findout and start defensive measures (Diet, exercise and medicines) the lesser the complications and better your quality of life. Do not stay in the dark, administer self tests and medications. This is oe illness if you are careful, you can control it.. totally.. for a very long time! I should know! I am a Type 2 for 22 years!
Please go to the Doctors, get checked and confirm, start a regimen, come back, we will all share our wealth of experience!
Don't be scared. It is very controllable!

| | | When I was diagnosed, I was shocked. The only symptom I had was that I was thirsty all the time. But I was on other meds that gave me "dry mouth", so I never thought anything of it. My doctor happened to run blood tests on me when I thought I had the flu. My BS was 186. He tested me again in two weeks, and it was 163. He said that two high tests mean you are diabetic. That was three years ago. It makes me wonder how many people are walking around with Diabetes and don't even know it!

| | | It would be a good thing if Drs would routine screen -but they don't that's another thread. From my perspective the more info I can help my doctor with helps me to avoid unnecessary tests, which with a 10,000 deduct, helps my pocket. Having a family member (mom) Diabetic, gives me a generalized clue.Having 4 kids, 2 over 9 lbs gives me a clue,Had the sweet drink test everytime only to be told okay- Living most of my life on carbs, to fight off low blood sugar drops with spells getting frequent- I better start asking questions.Where better to start than those that know because they live it. |

| | | Hi Becky - I see it's been a while since this post, but I'm fairly new to the forum and your post caught my attention. I do have an endo appt next week and have already had an OGTT and diagosed as pre-diabetic but they're leaning toward type 1.5. Question for you is what other tests did you have, what type are you and what treatment are you on? REason I ask is that I've had PLENTY of blood sugars at and above the numbers you mentioned in your post. Anywhere from normal to 254. Thanks!! |

| | | ESMOM: My doctor only did the two blood tests, and when they were both high, I was diagnosed. I am on 500mg Metformin once a day, and I try get my exercise in but it's hard to do it every day.
