Ok, here's me with mine. If I look sleepy, it's because I am. Oh, and the hairy wrist is Martin's, not mine.

Having joined the forum a bit later, would you have wristbands yet available, maroon if possible. I'm interested in two.

thanks,
Kurt

The administrator of this board was kind enough to invest in wristbands for our community. Many wear them as identification for medical personel. Water-proof and inexpensive.

Guide to bracelets for special causes and awareness

It started with a simple, yellow bracelet designed to raise money and awareness for cancer research. Today brightly colored silicone rubber bracelets or wristbands are being worn by celebrities, athletes, politicians and people young and old. It's become somewhat of a fashion statement to wear your heart on your wrist.

The awareness bracelet trend began back in Spring 2004 when Nike partnered with the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) for the Wear Yellow Live Strong campaign. To raise funds for LAF's education and research programs, they began selling yellow wristbands stamped with cancer survivor Armstrong's mantra: LIVESTRONG. For those affected by the disease, the yellow bracelets represented hope, courage and support for an organization that helps people with cancer. More than 20 million LIVESTRONG bracelets have been sold, and they are in such high demand that they are often backordered or out of stock.

Today, awareness bracelets are available in a wide variety of colors that are frequently associated with the causes they represent. Pink wristbands, for example, most often promote breast cancer awareness, while red might be associated with awareness for AIDS. However, not all bracelets financially support the causes they stand for. Due to the popularity of the wristband trend, some resellers and personal vendors sell bracelets for their own profit, while others create knock-offs of charitable designs. Colorful rubber wristbands are now being sold to promote everything from free speech to athletic teams to St. Patrick's Day. Some companies also offer custom designs, so a bracelet can be made in any color to promote any thing.

If it's important to you to wear a bracelet that financially benefits a special cause, look to purchase your wristband directly from well-known organizations that support it. If bracelet sales are part of their fundraising efforts, they will post it on their websites. Below is a list of organizations that raise funds and awareness through official bracelet sales.

Cancer:

The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) sells yellow LIVESTRONG wristbands in an effort to raise funds for public health initiatives, national advocacy, research, survivor education and resources.

CureBreastCancer, Inc. provides breast health awareness and education programs with rainbow-colored wristbands that say, "Support Breast Cancer Research and Education."

Lupus:

The Lupus Foundation of America, Inc. (LFA) seeks to find the causes and a cure for lupus with their official purple wristbands imprinted with the awareness slogan: "Someone You Know Has Lupus."

Autism:

The National Autism Association raises public and professional awareness of autism spectrum disorders with their blue puzzle piece bracelets that say, "Think Autism. Think Cure."

Diabetes:

The Diabetes Research Institute Foundation uses proceeds of their red "Insulin Is Not A Cure" wristbands to fund the Education for Children with Diabetes Foundation.

Cystic Fibrosis:

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation generates funds for vital research and care programs with their blue “Bracelets for Breath.”

Dangers of Tobacco Use:

The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids educates the public about the dangers of tobacco and secondhand smoke with red rubber wristbands imprinted with "1200," the number of Americans who die every day from tobacco.

Armed Forces:

The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, Inc. (TAPS) provides support and resources for those who have lost a loved one in the armed forces with the sales of their red, white and blue U.S.A. wristbands.

Aside from non-profit organizations, there are some legitimate bracelet vendors that donate a portion of wristband sales to appropriate charities and organizations. If they do, they will proudly state it in clear language on their websites. If shopping in a retail store, make a point to ask the salesperson where the bracelet sale proceeds are going. For example, some vendors might donate profits from the pink "Hope Faith Love" wristband to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Proceeds from the teal "Unite to Fight" bracelet for ovarian and cervical cancer awareness might go to Gilda’s Club. There are also a variety of bracelets being sold to benefit Tsunami Relief efforts.

Finally, some bracelet colors and designs are created solely for the purpose of raising awareness. These bracelets might not raise funds, but they do raise the spirits of the victims, survivors, family members and friends who wear them. These might include the popular "I Will" bracelets which are sold in blue and pink for cancer, green for muscular dystrophy and orange for multiple sclerosis.
