Hi All

Very happy to find you all!

I was diagnosed 6 days ago with type 2. My reading on the day of diagnosis was 18 mmol/l (all my subsequent readings have been between 15 and 22 mmol/l)

I'm a 44 year old male . I'm overweight by about 40 kgs . I get little/no execise. That all changed when I left the doctors rooms.

I'm now on glucophage 1000mg twice a day.

An impossible thirst and the fact that I was urinating about 6 times a night cause me to seak an answer on the net which in turn got me to the doctor.

I tested straight after gym tonight and had a reading of 8.1 mmol/l. What's up with that?

Thanks to xMenace for the newbies link! Simple sound advice that in the dark days immidiately post diagnosis, one simply doesn't think of.

Welcome Omac, glad you found the forums. Getting diagnosed can certainly be a wake-up call.

Remember that it can take metformin up to 3 weeks to reach optimal range in you body, so you may not see immediate improvement in your numbers.

Many of us have found that watching carbs (esp. potatoes, rice, pasta and bread) helps stabilize blood sugars.

Exercise is very important as well and many note that blood sugars are lower after exercise...my fastings are always lower the day after I have evening exercise.

A great book for newly diagnosed T2 "The First Year, Type II Diabetes," by Gretchen Becker. The author is also a diabetic and its full of good, easy to read information.

I would also encourage you to test often, esp 2 hrs after your first bite of food, so you can see have different foods affect your blood sugar and make smarter food choices. We're all different in our tolerances and this is the best way to learn what works or does not work for you.

Look around, post often, ask lots of questions--knowledge is power. We're all here to help one another.

Omac,
welcome to the forum.. Immediately after exercise, your BS level will be a low. It raises a little bit after that. Also one thing that I have learned in the last 2 months is that your BS is based on the amount of carbs that you eat. As PrinceLinda mentioned your meds will take 3-4 weeks to start working optimally. So, hold on for a few weeks and watch what you eat and test frequently.

Welcome again.

You need to remember one thing we are what we eat. You need to start eating food made with whole grains, Brown rice, whole grain bread, whole grain pasta, dreamfields make a really good pasta I love their penne I had it for dinner with a nice meat sauce my bg was 110 2 hours later and that was with two pieces of whole grain bread.
