Question new type 2

Hi, I am new type two. Have a older brother who has been on the pump for about ten years. My weight is excellent and have been working out on regular basis so what quite a schock to my doctor and myself. Started on metformin twice a day. Scores were still high so doc had me double up. Scores are still averaging close to 200 after three weeks. Does this mean I will more then likely go to insulin??? Thanks

I am sorry you still are not doing well. Your doctor may try adding another medicine or he may wait a few more weeks to see if the extra metformin will make a difference. I have been told that eventually all t2 will need insulin because D is a progressive disease. The harder the pancreas has to work to make enough insulin the sooner it wears out.
Don't get discourage and don't feel like you have failed if you need insulin. Some believe that t2's do better when insulin is started early.

I understand ..

Diet, exercise and testing are key. It can be a pain but if you focus on this and work with your doctor it will work out well.

good luck.. jim

test and manageing is key but you may need help from people and make sure you keep track of your readings for the doc.

You might want to ask your Doctor about being put on a sulfonylureas class drug like amaryl. This will help your body increase insulin production.

Welcome.

You may need insulin certainly but rather than treating that as a failure of sorts, look at it as the life elevating drug it is. Injections are easy for most people with just a bit of practice. And, the benefits are nearly instantaneous. I felt so much better so quickly I could have kicked myself for putting it off 6 months.

Have you had an A1c yet?
You say you are type 2 but have you had a test to confirm that?
Have you tried restricting carbs? High carb meals can overshadow any drug's effect.

Keep us posted.
Regards,

Thanks for all the answers. I am very positive but it is frustrating to take the meds and not reach a target score yet even with watching everything I eat as well as walking etc. Like I said earlier I have no weight to lose in fact I am having problems keeping weight now that every thing I eat is healthyHave not yet had my A1c. How long do you usually wait to have that done after being told. I have appointments this week at local hospital with educator and nutrionist. Tough getting head wrapped around all the changes. Not scheduled to see my family doc again until beginning of June which is about six weeks after being told.Morrisma what to you mean have test to confirm what type?? Should I be asking my doc to set me up with a endo?
Thanks

Welcome to Diabetes Forums baltbob.

Healthy and low carb are two different things. You might try keeping your carb count at a lower level and making sure they are foods that are low on the glycemic index. Simple carbs can be hard on your blood sugar.

If your endo decides that insulin is the best route for you to go, I wouldn't fight him much on it. It will make your food choices a bit easier.

Just wanted to welcome you to the forums. Nice site, great people, good friends here.

I have never had it, but I've heard that a c-peptide test can help determine type 1 vs type 2.

Low levels of c-peptide track the low levels of insulin produced by type 1's. Insulin resistance, or type 2, results in higher insulin production and more c-peptide.

Certainly I'd ask about this & see if the endo thinks its necessary.

If you are truly a type 2 here is a few tips about eating with diabetes.

There are several diets you can follow south-beach, Atkins, sugar-busters, etc, etc. The only one I don’t recommend is the one created by the ADA. Their idea of bg control is out of date and designed to get more people to follow it and not to make people healthy.

To determine carbs subtract fiber from the total carbs. You can also subtract artificial sweeteners.

Traditional wisdom says = Portion control is a must and do not get seconds. I like my way better get small portions that way you can get seconds It is an old Jedi Mind trick

Foods you can eat:

Meat = Beef well trimmed, chicken, fish broiled or baked, eggs, hotdogs without bun.

Nuts - most nuts are low in carbs, peanuts, walnuts, cashews, and almonds any that have total carbs of less then 10g.

spreads buy no sugar added jelly or try one of several reduced sugar brands , no sugar added Peanut butter – good for cholesterol

vegetables = almost anything but corn If you eat corn stick
with the small kernel corn on the cob. Eat lots of Green beans it raises good cholesterol.

Sugar free ice cream or no sugar added, sugar free jell-o

Chocolate that has a cocoa % >= 60% or low carb chocolate

Breads = whole grain or low carb whole grain.

Pasta = whole grain: Dreamfields, Wal-Mart has good brand

rice = brown rice, wild rice

sodas = diet only

Alcohol = Low carb beer, brands like Michelob ultra, Miller-Lite. Red wine or wine that is at least 13% alcohol. you can drink the following if meds allow but only with diet mixers or streight.
tequila, Vodka, Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, Jose Cuervo, Johnny Walker

avoid high carb food any anything with a lot of refined sugar or white flour

Fruit = try different ones to see how they effect your BS. Remember a sugar is sugar no matter how small.
