Greetings from space...

...Just kidding, I'm really on earth, but now that I have your attention...

I have just recently begun feeling the need to seek out others with diabetes as I feel I may be able to learn from others experiences as well as provide knowledge from my own.

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in late 2004, it didn't really come as a surprise to me as my family has had it on both sides.

The first thing I did when I went home from that fateful doctors appointment, was drink my last regular Coka~Cola... (yes I know..I'm such a rebel)

Thankfully the doctor said I didn't need insulin and my diabetes could be regulated through diet and oral pills.

So far I have been lucky enough to keep my diabetes under control, even if I have trouble with weight loss at the moment. That is still a large hurdle that I would like to tackle.

I have tried many things in order to reduce my weight, including diet, and excercise...although probably not as much excercise as I should be getting. My physical condition prevents me from getting the right kinds of excercise for the amounts of time required to do anything serious. I have arthritis as well which is also prohibitive..... my doctor has suggested gastric bypass surgery to me, but I refuse to undertake such an invasive and unnatural method when I know there are more practical and humane ways of dealing with the issue...I just have to find the right one for me.

My wife and children have been very supportive of me, and have put up with a lot of my **** over the course of the last few years...I am grateful for their patience.

It feels good to finally be able to speak with others after so long keeping to myself. I don't know why I felt the need to withdrawl but I am at a place now where I feel it would be beneficial for me and my family to associate with others who may be dealing with similar circumstances.

Thank you for hearing me, it will be nice getting aquainted with you all.

hyperglycaemically yours,

MMV

gfxdude/MMV,

Or should I say "Welcome to earth"? It's good that you're here now. I expect that touching base with all the great folks here at DF will help you a lot.

My personal observation is that losing weight requires more effort, and more patience than most people expect. With your limitations you may not be able to expend as much effort as others - this may mean that you'll need more patience. Set some reasonable goals and stick with them. Your in this for the long haul now. You can do it.

Good way of getting attention! My first thought was ... oh is there a shuttle up there at the moment?
But now that you got my attention, welcome to this wonderful haven for diabetics and the people who love them. They will make you laugh and give you so much support. That has been my experience anyway in the short time that I have belonged.
Good luck with the weight loss - you seem motivated and that is half the battle.

Thank you all for the wonderful welcome, I'm sure we'll get better aquainted as time goes on.

Whether that's good or bad I'll leave for you to determine as I have a rather odd sense of humour.

Polyurically yours,

MMV

Welcome to the forums I was diagnosed in 2004 as well, June 10 to be exact. I had just found out we had just found out a week earlier that my wife was having twins. I new in my heart that I had diabetes about 8 months earlier. I joined a new gym in September of 2003 I went the third different one in two years. I busted my butt for three months all of a sudden started dropping 10 pounds a week. The more I ate the more I lost. I joined this forum and was active for a while but decided to take a trip down that that river in Egypt. Stopped posting for about 2 1/2 years. I just got back from the de-Nile in February. I guess my uncle dying this past thanksgiving made me stop and think that if I didn't gain control of this I was not going to see my twins grow up. Its up to us only we can improve our lives the key is getting through all the contradictory bull. I have five different books on diabetes and they all have different takes they cant even agree what good control is or when someone should be classified as pre-diabetes.

Hi there, gfx! Glad to see you here. I fight a constant battle of the bulge, myself. I have a friend who is an aquatherapist and recommends water aerobics for folks with arthritis. Heated pool, much less stress on the old joints, and you can take breaks whenever you need to. Just a thought.

The encouragement and support here is fantastic. We're tickled to have you aboard!
